Description
In the anime Great Conquest: The Romance of Three Kingdoms, Guan Yu is introduced as a man of formidable presence and unwavering principle. His background is that of a fugitive who fled his hometown after killing a corrupt and abusive landlord, an act that defined his deep-seated intolerance for injustice. He first encounters his future sworn brothers, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, in a tavern, where their shared ambition to restore order to a collapsing Han dynasty forges an immediate bond. This meeting leads to the famous Peach Garden Oath, where the three men swear undying loyalty to one another, with Guan Yu becoming the second eldest brother.

Guan Yu is the very embodiment of righteousness and loyalty. Throughout the series, his personality is a blend of calm dignity and a quiet but intense inner strength. He is often the most stoic and composed of the three brothers, acting as a steadying force, particularly against Zhang Fei’s impulsive temper. However, this composed exterior masks a profound pride, not only in himself but especially in his sworn brothers and their cause. He is deeply honorable, adhering to a strict personal code of conduct that sometimes puts him at odds with the pragmatic and treacherous world of warlords. This pride and a certain stubbornness are his greatest flaws, making him look down upon those he considers dishonorable and leading to inflexibility in critical situations.

Guan Yu’s primary motivation is singular and absolute: his loyalty to his elder brother, Liu Bei. Every major decision he makes is driven by this oath. This is most famously illustrated during his temporary service to the rival warlord Cao Cao. After being separated from Liu Bei and captured, Guan Yu agrees to surrender but only under strict conditions, including that he would leave as soon as he learned of Liu Bei’s whereabouts. Despite being showered with lavish gifts, titles, and respect by Cao Cao, who desperately wants his loyalty, Guan Yu never wavers. He famously leaves everything behind, embarking on a dangerous journey across enemy lines to reunite with Liu Bei, an act that solidifies his reputation as the paragon of fraternal fidelity.

His role in the story is that of the righteous warrior and a pillar of the fledgling Shu-Han state. As the group’s most formidable general, he is entrusted with leading armies and governing conquered territories. His key relationships form the core of his character. With Liu Bei, he is the loyal and devoted younger brother who offers not just his sword but absolute fealty. With Zhang Fei, he shares a deep fraternal bond, often acting as the more temperate older sibling to Zhang Fei’s volatile nature. His relationship with Cao Cao is a complex and respectful rivalry, with Cao Cao representing a temptation of power that Guan Yu consistently rejects out of honor. He also shares a deep friendship with the enemy general Zhang Liao, a bond from their youth that persists despite the wars that divide them.

Throughout the series, Guan Yu’s development is a gradual, tragic arc. He grows from a wandering fugitive into a legendary general known as the God of War. However, his fatal flaw—arrogance—only intensifies with his success and fame. This hubris is most evident in his later years when he is given sole command of the strategic province of Jing. He dismisses the threat of the rival state of Wu, insults their lord Sun Quan by refusing a marriage alliance, and alienates his own subordinates. This ultimately leads to a catastrophic betrayal and his encirclement. In his final stand, the aging but still mighty warrior is captured and executed, a devastating blow from which his brother Liu Bei and the kingdom of Shu never fully recover.

Guan Yu possesses martial abilities that are nearly without peer. He is physically imposing, described as nine feet tall with a long, beautiful beard and a face often bearing a reddish complexion. His signature weapon is the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, a heavy guan dao that he wields with devastating skill. His combat prowess is legendary, most notably demonstrated when he single-handedly slew the enemy general Hua Xiong, returning with his head before the wine that had been poured for him had even cooled. He is also known for his endurance and tolerance for pain; one famous episode shows him calmly playing a game of Go while a doctor scrapes a poisoned arrow from his arm bone, without a single flinch. When mounted on his steed, Red Hare, he becomes an almost unstoppable force on the battlefield, solidifying his legacy as a warrior whose might was only ever matched by his sense of honor.
