Description
A towering general serving Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period, Guan Yu first joins Liu Bei and Zhang Fei as recruits combating the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Their combat prowess earns recognition and honorary general titles, leading the trio to swear a brotherhood oath in a peach garden. Guan Yu becomes the second eldest, cementing his unwavering loyalty to Liu Bei.
Distinguished by his red face and long, well-kept beard earning him the epithet "Lord Magnificent Beard," he typically wears green robes over battle armor. He wields the guan dao Green Dragon Crescent Blade and rides the legendary steed Red Hare. His character blends martial mastery with scholarly pursuits, demonstrating proficiency in texts like the Zuo Zhuan.
During the coalition assault on Dong Zhuo, Guan Yu distracts the formidable Lü Bu at Hulao Gate, enabling Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Cao Cao to breach the capital and rescue Emperor Xian. Following Dong Zhuo's fall, Guan Yu witnesses Lü Bu's execution. Cao Cao subsequently gifts him Lü Bu's horse, Red Hare. When Cao Cao turns against allies, Guan Yu separates from his brothers and is captured. He serves Cao Cao temporarily to repay a life debt, maintaining ultimate allegiance to Liu Bei.
His service under Cao Cao includes the Battle of Boma, where he slays Yan Liang, lifts the siege, and earns the peerage "Marquis of Hanshou Village." Despite Cao Cao's generosity and efforts to secure his loyalty, Guan Yu departs upon fulfilling his debt, undertaking a famed journey through five passes to rejoin Liu Bei and Zhang Fei.
Reunited with Liu Bei, Guan Yu participates in critical engagements like the defense of Jing Province and the Battle of Fancheng. His complex honor compels him to spare Cao Cao during the Battle of Chibi, acknowledging past kindnesses despite opposing allegiances. Later, guarding Jing Province during Liu Bei's Yi Province campaign, he discovers Fengji, a surrogate daughter figure based on the fictionalized Lady Guan Yinping.
Conflict intensifies as the Sun-Liu alliance fractures. Guan Yu suffers defeat at the Battle of Fancheng against combined Wei and Wu forces. This culminates in his capture and execution by Sun Quan's general Lü Meng at Linju, alongside his son Guan Ping.
