Description
Hana Sugurono is a 17-year-old girl who was cryogenically preserved in Project 7 Seeds, a contingency plan for human survival following a predicted global catastrophe. She is the girlfriend of Arashi Aota, another project participant, and is assigned to Team Spring.
She possesses a very attractive physical appearance with a feminine figure that includes a sizeable bust and curvy hips. She originally had long wavy hair, a point of pride since Arashi admired it, but later cut it short due to the impracticality of maintaining it in the harsh new environment.
Her parents, Sugurono Takashi and Sugurono Miho, were both deeply involved with Project 7 Seeds, though she was unaware of this during their lives. She felt respect rather than strong emotional attachment toward them. Kaname Mozunoto, a key project figure, served as a temporary godparent during her early years. Hana did not initially realize Kaname and her father were separate people until much later.
Her personality exhibits a strong, courageous, and charismatic exterior. She demonstrates a blatant disregard for self-preservation and a strong sense of justice, often confronting others over perceived wrongdoings. This makes her appear abrasive, stubborn, and willful, causing interpersonal difficulties. She often prefers solitude but acknowledges this as a personal flaw. Through her experiences, she learns to enjoy using her survival skills to help others.
Beneath her outward strength, Hana struggles with low self-esteem and an inability to depend on others. Having never had a best friend, she longs for acceptance but fears becoming a burden. She exhibits complexes about her appearance, expressing dismay over her hair and perceived decreases in her bust size, and sometimes feels envy toward women considered attractive. Her friends, particularly Haru, Fujiko, and Chisa, understand and accept her.
Her primary skill is mountain climbing, including free-climbing overhanging cliffs without safety ropes. This expertise comes from childhood excursions with her father, who taught her wilderness survival. She also has an affinity for wild animals, which become attached to her even though she never owned pets and often tries to push them away.
As a child, Hana frequently went camping and mountain climbing with her father, which led to her dream of becoming an explorer. Due to her personality and upbringing, she had very few friends; her only mentioned friend is Arashi, who became her boyfriend after saving her from drowning at age 10. Their relationship was close, and they often swam together. However, her strong sense of justice sometimes led her into danger, such as an incident where she was almost gang-raped by men she caught committing illegal acts. She was saved by Arashi and later chastised by her father for her lack of self-preservation.
After awakening in the new world, Hana found herself with Team Spring in the open ocean. The group reached an island but could not stay due to carnivorous insects, forcing them to live on a raft. She clashed frequently with Yanagi, the team's guide, due to his misogynistic attitude; he once attempted to rape her, but a thunderstorm interrupted the assault. Yanagi later became host to wasp larvae that took over his body, but he regained consciousness in time to sacrifice himself by burning to save the team.
The team traveled to Ogino Fuji in Kanagawa Prefecture, where they found a note left by Natsu of Summer Team B. On the mainland of Kanto, they encountered dangerous water nymphs, and Haru's music saved them, renewing Hana's determination. She later invited Aramaki, a survivor from Winter Team, to join Spring Team.
Hana accidentally touched a Blue Mucus organism and contracted Redskin Disease, which caused a severe rash. Unwilling to let Arashi see her in that state, she ran away, followed by Haru and Aramaki. They reached Cat Island, where Kaname almost killed her to end her suffering. She regained her will to live upon finding proof of Arashi's survival. Aramaki discovered that saltwater could cure the disease, and Hana soaked in a saltwater lake to recover.
On their return journey, they encountered Team Autumn and the Ryugu Shelter, where they learned of the shelter's fate. After escaping the crumbling building, Hana invited Team Autumn to Team Spring's base, only to find it destroyed by a landslide. While searching for survivors, she discovered that Momotaro had been captured by Team Summer A. She attempted a rescue but was caught by Ango and Ryou. A carnivorous bat attack forced them to cooperate. Due to injuries, Team Autumn joined Team Summer A's community.
When Team Summer A learned Hana was Takashi's daughter, they became furious. The situation deteriorated, leading to an attempted rape by Ango and an attempted murder by Ryou. During a cave exploration, Hana was swept away by an underground river. The cold water induced a Mammalian Diving Reflex, rendering her unconscious. She was presumed dead but was carried to a coast by a current and glowing jellyfish. She suffered temporary memory loss, regressing to a childlike state, but gradually recovered.
On the coast, she befriended a boar family and later followed a herd of white horses to find water. She rescued a foal from a carnivorous tree, and it adopted her as its stepmother. In the forest, she reunited with Fujiko and Chisa. Although Chisa accidentally killed a young boar, forcing Hana to drive the animals away for their safety, the reunion brought her joy. The three decided to embrace life in the new world.
Their happiness was short-lived when they accidentally released Shiitake spores from an old mushroom station, causing ecological imbalance and death. A lightning strike set the forest on fire. Aramaki, who had been searching for Hana with Ayu and his dogs, arrived. The adult dogs sacrificed themselves by setting themselves on fire to destroy the mushrooms, leaving Hana and Aramaki to watch helplessly.
Hana greatly admires Aramaki and struggles with feelings of infatuation despite her relationship with Arashi. She often feels compelled to hug or comfort Aramaki when he is tormented by his past.
Her name "Hana" means flower and "Sugurono" means burning fields to make way for new crops. Prior to being frozen, she lived in Setagaya, Tokyo, and attended school in West Shinjuku. She knows how to make and fly toy kites, bamboo guns, and acorn chess pieces, as well as carve boomerangs for use as weapons. In the past, she played video games for fun.
