ONA
Description
Botan Saotome serves as the guide for Team Summer B in the post-apocalyptic world. Before being chosen for the survival project, she worked as a police officer, a profession that equipped her with the physical and mental fortitude necessary for the challenges ahead.
Her past is marked by profound personal tragedy. While pregnant, Botan was involved in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver. Although she survived, the accident caused her to lose her unborn child. The immense strain of this loss led to the end of her marriage. Her ex-husband later remarried, and Botan chose to participate in the 7SEEDS project, seeking a future in a world she believed would be free from such senseless, preventable tragedies caused by drunk driving.
In the new world, Botan is a figure of immense strength and reliability. She possesses a tall, muscular build and is often recognized by her distinctive Rastafari-inspired hairstyle of long, dense braids. Her personality is straightforward and outspoken, and she can be demanding of her teammates, but this gruff exterior masks a wide heart and a fierce, maternal protectiveness. She consistently risks her life to ensure the safety of the mostly younger survivors under her care, viewing them as children who need guidance and protection.
Her primary motivation is the survival and well-being of her team. She is a pragmatic leader who remains calm and courageous in crises, becoming a constant source of relief for the group. Her law enforcement background makes her skilled in martial arts and various survival techniques. She is also a survivor of the project's rigorous survival training, which was conducted prior to the participants being cryogenically preserved.
While her role is to lead, Botan's journey is also one of personal conviction. When she and her team encounter the dangerous individuals Ango and Ryou, her vigilance increases. She discovers hidden weapons in their belongings and contemplates using lethal force, specifically poison, to neutralize the threat to her team. Her most significant moment of development comes during the group's exploration of a ship known as the Shelter Fuji. Confronted with a culture that glorifies a beautiful death and the expectation to take her own life to preserve honor, she rejects this philosophy. She deliberately discards a necklace containing potassium cyanide, a poison given to her by a project official as a means to choose death. By throwing it away, Botan commits herself and her team to the more difficult path of relentless survival, choosing to live and fight rather than surrender to despair.
Despite her strength, she carries deep emotional scars with grace. In a moment of quiet vulnerability, she expresses a noble wish for her ex-husband and his new wife to live happily until the very end. This sentiment reveals a character who, while hardened by loss and responsibility, has not lost her capacity for compassion and kindness.
