Description
Chrono Shindō underwent significant personal transformation through the card game Vanguard, evolving from an anti-social individual with limited interests into a passionate cardfighter. Before discovering Vanguard, he displayed a consistently bored and unmotivated demeanor, maintaining a cold expression and speaking in low, incomplete phrases. Poor social skills led to him unintentionally intimidating others, and he rarely smiled except during card fights. This stemmed from his childhood in an orphanage after his mother died shortly after his birth and his father disappeared ten years before the series begins. During this time, he developed a loner complex and low self-esteem, feeling he possessed nothing. He eventually moved in with his aunt Mikuru as his legal guardian but often avoided her to avoid feeling burdensome, aiming for independence. At school, his irritability and tendency to resolve conflicts through violence, such as beating up others for mockery or bad behavior (particularly about the pink swirl in his red hair), earned him a delinquent reputation.

Receiving a mysteriously placed Gear Chronicle deck in his shoe locker, with directions to Card Capital 2, sparked his change. A card sharing part of his name piqued his initial interest. During his first match against Kamui Katsuragi, he performed a Stride technique to achieve a comeback victory after hearing the voice of Interdimensional Dragon, Mystery-flare Dragon. This ignited his fascination with Vanguard's lore and the concept of Stride representing new future possibilities. Chrono considers Gear Chronicle a friend and actively seeks the identity of the person who gave him the deck. While sometimes gullible, believing exaggerated stories from others, he values the passionate feeling of fighting over winning or losing.

His social skills gradually improved through continued Vanguard activities. Initially finding teammates Tokoha Anjou and Shion Kiba annoying when forced into Team TRY3, their early interactions featured constant bickering. However, after they helped him reach Grade 3, he warmed to them, eventually considering them true friends, demonstrated when he spent a day trying to cheer them up after a tournament loss. Despite improvements, he retained a degree of rashness and selflessness, such as betting sandwiches he intended for others and then giving them away as an apology. He also maintained a tendency to handle problems directly, confronting Team Trick Trick or using harsh comments to provoke Shion out of quitting Vanguard.

Chrono possesses notable abilities: above-average luck during cardfights, interpreted as his will altering fate; a strong imagination valuable for creating vivid attack images; the capacity to hear voices from Cray, the world where Vanguard units reside; and considerable athletic prowess. Necessity, from often being alone, also forged competence in domestic tasks like cooking and gutting fish.

During the Stride Gate incident, Chrono became a key figure in resolving the conflict involving Ryuzu Myoujin and the Company's efforts to open the Stride Gate. He temporarily possessed the Zeroth Dragon of End of the World, Dust, after defeating Gastille but lost it alongside his G Zone after being defeated by Dragon Deity of Destruction, Gyze. He later regained it by performing a Dimensional Overstride with Chrono Dran. This arc involved intense battles to protect the Zodiac Time Beasts and the future of Vanguard itself, culminating in a decisive fight against Ryuzu.

Following Stride Gate, Chrono enrolled as a first-year student at Harumi High School. He worked part-time at Card Capital 2 and served as the Generation Master, fighting challengers. After Team TRY3 disbanded, he formed a new team, Team Striders, with Taiyou Asukawa and Kazuma Shouji. His appearance changed over time; he grew taller, his facial features and hairstyle became more similar to his father's. His clothing evolved from a purple school uniform to various casual outfits, including a red jacket during the GIRS Crisis and Stride Gate arcs, and later a black jumper and turquoise jeans after the U20 tournament.
