Makoto Kyogoku stands 184 cm tall and weighs 79 kg. This 18-year-old honed his exceptional martial arts skills at Haido High School, serving as captain of the karate team and earning the nickname "The Prince of Kicks." His initial encounter with Sonoko Suzuki occurred when she cheered for her friend Ran Mouri at a karate tournament, sparking his interest. They later reunited at his family's inn in Izu, where Sonoko vacationed with Ran and Conan Edogawa. During this stay, Makoto protected Sonoko from a serial killer targeting her under false suspicions, cementing their bond despite his frequent absences for international karate competitions and overseas studies. Their long-distance relationship persists, with Sonoko sending handmade gifts and Makoto remaining loyal, though his competitive commitments and bashfulness around her create challenges. Makoto possesses extraordinary combat abilities, maintaining a 400-match international winning streak broken only when he skipped a tournament to meet Sonoko's parents. His feats include catching BB pellets from 11 assailants while vision-impaired, disarming sword-wielding gangsters, shattering weapons with kicks, and stopping a moving van by lifting its tail section. He also demonstrates acute observational skills, identifying Kaitou Kid disguised as Sonoko through minute physiological differences like finger length. Personality-wise, Makoto maintains calmness in crises but becomes flustered concerning Sonoko. He holds conservative views on her attire, often worrying about her "catching cold" in revealing clothing. He consistently wears a band-aid over his left eyebrow, concealing a scar; this later serves as a talisman when he places a photo of Sonoko underneath it. His protective nature extends beyond Sonoko, as seen when he prevented a culprit's suicide attempt during a case where he was falsely accused. In the "Understudy" case, Makoto substituted for an incapacitated actor during a film shoot but became a murder suspect when the actor fell to his death. He cleared his name after the true culprit, Hideka Aburai, was exposed for orchestrating the death via a prank involving an insect toy. Makoto later intervened to stop Aburai's attempted suicide by van crash, collaborating with Ran to halt the vehicle. Makoto was formally introduced to the Suzuki family, who approved of him. He assists them in security matters, notably during Kaitou Kid's jewel heists. His relationship milestones include misunderstanding Sonoko's handmade pottery as a vase, rushing through a snowstorm over jealousy about Valentine's chocolate (which she intended for him), and camping in a forest to decipher her meeting instructions. Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small does not feature Makoto Kyogoku.
