Description
Charlotte Elwyn Yeager, nicknamed Shirley, hails from Myra, West Virginia, in the United States of Liberion. Born to farming parents, she has two younger brothers and two younger sisters. Before her military career, she earned fame as a motorcycle racer, setting multiple land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats aboard a magic-enhanced Indian motorcycle. Her record of 178.24 miles per hour (286.9 km/h) and resulting press popularity garnered her the nicknames "Glamorous Shirley" and "Queen of the Speed."
Her obsession with speed drove her to volunteer for the Witch Corps in 1943. Initial enlistment hurdles due to Liberion's strict requirements were overcome thanks to her mechanical expertise and prior military contacts. Following training, she served with the Liberion Army's 363rd Fighter Squadron, Eighth Air Force, before transferring to the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. This transfer occurred after she faced potential expulsion for unauthorized Striker Unit modifications, though her exceptional abilities as a Witch prevented dismissal.
Magnanimous and sociable, Shirley possesses a thrill-seeking personality centered on her dream of breaking the sound barrier. She maintains a carefree, individualistic attitude, valuing personal freedom while still performing effectively in critical missions. A notable obsession with cleanliness led her to transport her personal bath to the Britannia base. She is also known for reckless actions like dangerous driving and flouting regulations, frequently resulting in confinement. Despite this, she is trusted for her objectivity and skill in lightening the unit's mood, particularly in managing the problematic behavior of her close friend, Francesca Lucchini, whom she treats like a younger sister.
Shirley's magical ability, classified as "Speed Boost" (超加速), allows her to perform tasks at extraordinary speeds when focused. This power manifests unconsciously, exponentially enhancing her Striker Unit's performance. She became the first Witch to break the sound barrier twice, though neither instance was officially recorded due to a lack of witnesses. Her mechanical skills are exceptional; she modifies and maintains her equipment, restores vehicles and aircraft, and assembles complex devices like radar detectors. Her Striker Unit, a heavily modified North Liberion P-51D Mustang nicknamed "Merlin," features a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and redesigned barriers for high-speed flight. In combat, she employs a Browning M1918 automatic rifle with custom magazines, occasionally using a Thompson M1A1 submachine gun or Colt M1911A1 pistol.
While serving with the 501st, Shirley intercepted a high-speed Neuroi during a beach training exercise. After Lucchini accidentally altered her Striker Unit, Shirley unintentionally exceeded the speed of sound to destroy the Neuroi, collapsing afterward and requiring rescue. Following the 501st's disbandment after Gallia's liberation, she and Lucchini traveled to North Africa, joining the 31st Joint Fighter Squadron. They participated in Mediterranean and African defense operations but lost contact with Liberion military supply lines, forcing reliance on local resources. Her distinctive red outfit was acquired in Britannia during motorcycle repairs.
Shirley later reunited with the reformed 501st in Romagna after Venice's fall. She showed initial interest in testing Ursula Hartmann's experimental Me 262 Swallow jet Striker Unit but lost interest after Lucchini sensed malfunctions during a test flight. When Gertrud Barkhorn used the unit and faced a life-threatening accelerator failure, Shirley intervened by going supersonic again to manually trigger the emergency release cable, saving Barkhorn despite their longstanding rivalry.
Her relationships include a sisterly bond with Francesca Lucchini, whom she often cradles and supports. She acts as an older sister figure to Yoshika Miyafuji and Lynette Bishop and shares mutual admiration with fellow Liberion Witch Gerard. Her rivalry with Gertrud Barkhorn involves frequent clashes, yet they maintain professional respect for each other's abilities.
