Description
Aoi Tategami, also known as Cure Gelato, is a bold and free-spirited 14-year-old second-year middle school student from the prestigious Tategami Corporate family. She has dark blue hair often worn in a thick ponytail with a yellow ribbon, bright blue eyes, and distinctive fanged teeth. Her rebellious style includes a white raglan top, light blue mini-skirt, dark blue leather jacket with a gold crown pin, blue thigh-high stockings, and black-and-white sneakers. Valuing freedom above all, she is enthusiastic and untamed like a lion, though she chafes under her family’s strict expectations for behavior and appearance.
Her passion for rock music ignited in childhood after she witnessed a performance by singer Ayane Misaki. Aoi later honed her skills busking on the streets, where bandleader Sonobe Kei discovered her and invited her to join the rock band Wild Azur as vocalist. The band’s name reflects her signature color and fiery determination. Her musical pursuits initially clashed with her butler, Mizushima Mitsuyoshi, who groomed her as the family’s refined heiress, but he eventually embraced her dreams after recognizing her dedication.
During a Battle of the Bands competition, Aoi defended a lion-faced ice cream treat from a Kirakiraru Thief. Her resolve awakened an Animal Sweet and the Sweets Pact, transforming her into Cure Gelato, the Pretty Cure of freedom and passion. Her Cure form blends ice cream motifs with leonine flair: her hair brightens into a voluminous lion-like mane accented by blue ears and a tail, she wears a crown with ice cream detailing, an ice cream cone-patterned jacket, a two-toned skirt resembling swirls, and paw-inspired gloves and boots. Her combat style mixes frost-based techniques and a lion’s roar, with battle cries like “I’m getting fired up!” and “Woooah!” She can freeze her fists to strike foes or unleash roars that shatter negativity.
Aoi bonds with fellow Cures Ichika Usami and Himari Arisugawa despite their contrasting temperaments, and she maintains deep ties with her bandmates Kei, Ryuuta, and Sara, eventually succeeding Kei as band leader. A turning point occurs when Mitsuyoshi drags her from a concert, exposing her lineage; the conflict resolves when he confesses his secret appreciation for her music and pledges support for her dual life as musician and patisserie apprentice. Key trials include tempering competitive arrogance, embracing vulnerability after failure, and breaking free from brainwashing as Dark Gelato. In cross-team efforts, she joins collective heroism to combat monstrous threats, contributing her ice powers and strength. Her growth includes battling self-doubt when Wild Azur is overshadowed at a festival, but friends’ encouragement restores her passion for performance. As an adult, she continues rocking with Wild Azur, adopting a mature yet bold style while keeping her iconic ponytail.
