Description
Tomoe Udagawa is the drummer for the band Afterglow and a student at Haneoka Girls' High School. She is the older sister of Ako Udagawa, Roselia's drummer. Standing 168cm tall, Tomoe is Afterglow's tallest member, with long maroon hair, turquoise eyes, and a mature style often featuring studs or chains. This contrasts with Ako's shorter stature, cooler hair tones, and warmer eye color.
Relaxed, cheerful, and dependable, Tomoe avoids speaking negatively about others or holding grudges. She acts as a stabilizing force in Afterglow, maintaining cohesion with her mature yet cool demeanor. Despite her calm exterior, she exhibits hotblooded tendencies, rushing impulsively into situations when those she cares about are threatened, occasionally leading to complications. She shares a unique mental wavelength with characters like Kasumi Toyama and Kokoro Tsurumaki, surprising others. Tomoe struggles to decline requests for help, frequently prioritizing others' needs over her own well-being, such as refusing visits when ill to avoid spreading sickness. Her hobbies include fashion, collecting landscape photo books, and traditional Japanese taiko drumming, which she has performed at local festivals for over a decade.
Tomoe's relationship with Ako is central. Ako deeply admires her, calling Tomoe the "world’s coolest drummer" and citing her as the inspiration to pursue drumming. Tomoe supports Ako's growth in Roselia, offering advice during struggles like difficulties with bandmate Sayo Hikawa. Though sometimes perplexed by Ako’s chuunibyou behavior, Tomoe consistently encourages her to define her own path to "coolness." During the "Tomoe SOS! Ako’s Grand Nursing Operation" event, Tomoe fell ill, leading Ako to care for her diligently, highlighting Tomoe’s pride in Ako’s increasing reliability. Later, when Ako’s drumming skills improved, Tomoe briefly questioned her own role but reaffirmed her determination to remain someone Ako can look up to.
Within Afterglow, Tomoe’s drumming provides the rhythmic foundation while her candid nature helps mediate tensions, like occasional clashes with Ran Mitake due to their shared competitive streak. She works part-time at Galaxy Ramen alongside Masuki and previously worked at a fast-food restaurant with bandmate Himari Uehara. Her deep community ties include friendships with shopping district adults and fellow drummer Saaya Yamabuki. Tomoe is modest about her popularity at school, where she and Kaoru Seta are regarded as Haneoka’s most admired students.
Character development shows Tomoe evolving from a supportive sister to confronting self-doubt. Her initial confidence wavered as Ako’s abilities grew, but she resolved to improve her drumming to uphold her role model status. Events like "Umbrella For The Autumn Rain" reinforce her resolve to embody Ako’s admiration. She retains playful traits, chanting "soi-ya" before performances and sharing identical dialogue lines with Moca Aoba, even pretending to switch bodies with her during a Halloween event.
