Description
Nurarihyon is a yo-kai who appears as a supporting antagonist in the animated film Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan!, where he is known in some localizations as Zazel. His portrayal draws on the traditional Japanese yokai of the same name, an elderly and aristocratic figure who, despite an unassuming and somewhat comical appearance, is regarded in folklore as one of the most powerful and elite of all yokai and is associated with commanding other spirits, including leading them in the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons.

In the film, Nurarihyon occupies a high position in the Yo-kai World as the head of the Yo-kai Council. During the final portion of the story, he seals Lord Enma, the ruler of the Yo-kai World, and then announces that Enma has contracted a human illness that leaves him unable to exercise his authority. With Enma removed, Nurarihyon takes de facto control of the Yo-kai World in his capacity as the council's head, effectively making himself the governing figure. He carries out this takeover with the assistance of two servants, Aristokat and Duke Doggy, and ultimately serves as the film's final boss when the protagonists confront him.

His characterization is that of a villain steeped in older ways of doing things, set in contrast to Lord Enma, who is presented as the current and more capable leader. His motivations center on seizing power from Enma and restoring an older order of authority, and he is willing to use deception to achieve this, as shown by his false claim that Enma was sick. Rather than relying on an open confrontation, he first removes Enma and then presents the situation as a legitimate transfer of authority, indicating that maintaining an appearance of proper succession matters to him.

The central relationship in the film is his opposition to Lord Enma, whom he betrays and imprisons. He also commands Aristokat and Duke Doggy, who act as his subordinates during the scheme, and he comes into conflict with the human protagonist and his yo-kai companions, who work to uncover the truth and restore Enma to power.

Within the film, his trajectory moves from a respected authority figure to an exposed schemer once his deception is revealed. Across the wider Yo-kai Watch franchise, the same character is shown in a different light in later films: in Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends, he is described as Enma's right-hand man, though he serves the Ancient Enma rather than the present Lord Enma, and some later appearances treat him in a more comedic manner. This later portrayal suggests that his villainous role in this particular film is tied to the specific circumstances of the story rather than being a permanent aspect of his character.

In terms of abilities, his most significant demonstrated feat in the film is sealing Lord Enma, an act that requires considerable power and is the key to his rise to authority. His traditional yokai identity also carries the trait of being a powerful leader among yokai despite a mild outward appearance. In the Yo-kai Watch games, the corresponding character Zazel, whose Japanese name is Nurarihyon, is classified as a Rank S, Drain-attribute Rare Yo-kai of the Shady tribe, and he originally appeared as a boss yo-kai before becoming recruitable, reflecting his high standing within the franchise.
