Description
Nurarihyon is a yokai who appears in a supporting role in the 2008 animated film Gegege no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!, which belongs to the fifth era of the GeGeGe no Kitarō anime franchise. Across the franchise as a whole, he is one of the most enduring enemies of the protagonist Kitarō, and in many later installments he is identified as the supreme commander of Japanese yokai, a reputation that became attached to him largely through the anime rather than through original folklore.

His appearance is that of an elderly yokai with a large bald head, a deeply wrinkled face, a thin build, and neatly kept clothing in a kimono style, giving him the look of a prosperous old man. In the fifth series era, to which this film belongs, his design and manner were made more imposing, with the comical touches found in some earlier versions reduced in favor of a more dignified and menacing presence.

In personality, Nurarihyon is sly, calculating, and underhanded, and he prefers to work through others rather than face opponents directly. He typically schemes to hire, trick, or manipulate stronger yokai into carrying out his plans, and he is willing to use cowardly or treacherous methods to reach his goals. While some earlier anime portrayals gave him a bumbling, humorous side, the fifth series treats him as a serious and formidable villain. He is described as nursing a deep hatred for Kitarō, to the point that he is said to feel even defeating Kitarō would not satisfy his anger unless Kitarō's allies were destroyed as well.

His motivations center on his rivalry with Kitarō and on advancing his own standing within the yokai world. He acts as a self-styled leader of Japanese yokai and opposes Kitarō because, from his perspective, Kitarō takes the side of humans at the expense of yokai. In this film he is not the central threat; he appears in a supporting capacity among the many yokai featured in the story, while the film's main conflict is driven by other characters and forces.

His defining relationship is his recurring rivalry with Kitarō, whom he regards as his chief obstacle. He is also shown interacting with other yokai as a commander or collaborator, sometimes giving orders and sometimes relying on subordinates, though the exact alliances change from installment to installment. In the franchise he has at times been accompanied by attendants such as Shu-no-Bon and has worked alongside other villainous yokai, but these connections vary between series.

In terms of abilities, his strength lies chiefly in cunning and manipulation rather than raw supernatural power. The original manga and the first anime described him as skilled at plotting but not especially capable of aggressive magical arts. As his image as the supreme commander of yokai became established in later anime, he was gradually given a wider range of techniques and greater power, and by the fifth series he carries himself with the authority and force expected of a leader of yokai, combining strategy, deception, and command of other yokai with direct combat ability.

His development across the franchise is marked by inconsistency. He first appeared as a one-story villain who disguised himself as a wealthy human named Yamada, carried out acts of terrorism, and attempted to dispose of Kitarō. He was absent from the second anime series and returned as a semi-regular rival from the third series onward, and it was in that period that his current image as the self-styled supreme commander of Japanese yokai took shape. In this film, therefore, he represents the mature and serious version of the character that the fifth series established: a proud, scheming yokai leader whose long history with Kitarō makes him one of the franchise's most familiar antagonists.
