Nurarihyon, alternatively named Zazel in select localizations, is a Shadowside Yo-kai of the Onnen tribe whose narrative spans distinct timelines within official media. Fifty years prior to Shadowside events, he operates as Youma Shouzoku Nurarihyon, a young elite in the Yo-kai World serving directly under Ancient Enma as both aide and bodyguard. His ceremonial robes denote his high rank and direct subordination to Enma, reflecting his early role as a genius magic user entrusted with critical responsibilities. Thirty years after the original series, Nurarihyon functions as chief of staff to successive Lord Enmas. Following Enma's abdication, he partners with Enma to investigate a malicious plot by the Overseer entity threatening the sky. During this period, he delegates his Yo-kai Council chairmanship duties to subordinates Duke Doggy and Aristokat. Nurarihyon's Lightside form visually resembles his classic appearance but features modified robes and a unique staff bearing an Onimaro emblem. This emblem's eye shifts between red, green, and yellow, though his Shadowside form remains unrevealed across all appearances. During the Onimaro crisis in *Shadowside: Oni-ō no Fukkatsu*, Nurarihyon is imprisoned alongside Enma after their overthrow by the self-proclaimed ruler Kaira. Upon escaping confinement, he aids Enma in thwarting the Onimaro invasion by retrieving the Fudou Raimeiken sword and mentoring new human Yo-kai Watch wielders. He persists as a steadfast advisor and combatant throughout the conflict, reinforcing his role as Enma's loyal right hand. His aristocratic demeanor and association with commanding other Yo-kai draw from broader mythological inspiration, recontextualized within the Yo-kai World as a political figure in its power structure.
