Description
Chōhi Yokutoku, also known as Rinrin, is a central character whose background spans multiple installments. Orphaned young when bandits killed her parents, she was raised by her grandfather. After his death, she formed the "Rinrin Bandits" with village children, using pranks to combat loneliness. This time developed her trap-making and leadership skills, though it also revealed her naivety and lack of foresight.
Her life shifted upon meeting Kan'u Unchō, who shared her experience of familial loss. Following a fierce battle and an emotional breakdown where Rinrin confessed her isolation, the two swore a vow of sisterhood. This bond defines her fierce loyalty; she treats Kan'u as an older sister ("onee-chan") and extends similar devotion to allies. She initially resisted Ryūbi Gentoku joining their group, fearing displacement in Kan'u's affections, but eventually accepted Ryūbi as another older sister ("Tōka nee-chan") after Ryūbi positioned herself as the eldest in their trio.
Personality-wise, Rinrin is exuberant, speaks in third-person ("Rinrin thinks..."), and uses the verbal tic "nano-da." Beneath her cheerfulness lies deep fragility from her losses, occasionally causing emotional breakdowns, like during a birthday dream about her parents. She shows fierce dedication, defending villages against bandits even while severely ill, though this impairs her combat. Her lack of romantic and sexual knowledge often leads to unintentional comedy, such as coining the term "Operation Houkei-Peeling" unaware of its double meaning. She is grouped with Bachou as one of "the two who don't have to help in councils" due to illiteracy and difficulty with complex planning.
In combat, she wields the massive spear Jouhachidabou with exceptional skill, favoring slashes over thrusts. Despite her small stature, she possesses superhuman strength, capable of sending multiple enemies airborne with one strike or lifting heavy objects like battering rams single-handedly. Her agility and horsemanship (or pig-riding in the anime) complement her prowess. However, reliance on raw power over technique leaves her vulnerable to experienced fighters. Other weaknesses include low intelligence, impatience, and susceptibility to ailments like colds.
Distinctive traits include a tiger-shaped hairpin mirroring her expressions, going barefoot, and a love of food placing her among the series' four biggest eaters. She briefly kept a bear cub and boar piglet as pets, leading to recurring gags where she mistakes wild animals for them. In game lore, she possesses a war rating of 99 but offers no defensive bonuses as a commander.
