TV-Series
Description
Kōchū, also known by her style name Kanshō and her true name Shion, is a general who serves the Shu faction in the Shin Koihime Musō series. She is a reimagining of the historical figure Huang Zhong, adapted into a female character. In her background, she was the only daughter of the Huang family. Because a woman alone could not inherit the family lands, she entered into an arranged marriage with a city lord of Yizhou who was a relative of the family. The marriage was not forced or unhappy; she and her husband led a peaceful and moderately content life together. She gave birth to a daughter named Riri. Her husband later passed away, leaving her a widow. Before joining Shu, she served as a general under the powerful Jingzhou governor Liu Biao alongside Wei Yan and Huang Zu. When Liu Biao's territory was transferred to Liu Bei, she came to serve the Shu army. Her initial encounter with the main group differs between versions. In the anime adaptation, her daughter Riri is kidnapped by bandits who pressure Kōchū into assassinating a government official who had been cracking down on them. Kan'u and her companions rescue the child before the assassination can take place, and Kōchū joins their group to repay the debt she feels she owes. In the visual novel, Riri is kidnapped by men under Enshou's command to force Kōchū to fight against Kazuto's army. Chou'un and Kazuto's group rescue Riri and return her to her mother. Seeing that Kazuto is a good person, Kōchū offers her services to fight at his side.
In terms of personality, Kōchū is a gentle and composed woman with strong maternal instincts. She is often described as a nurturing, healing-type older sister figure who is relied upon by others in both official and personal matters due to her wealth of experience and broad-minded tolerance. She is calm, dignified, and a person of virtue in everyday life. However, she has a somewhat childish or delusional side that surfaces at times, such as crying when she accidentally drops and damages a precious object because a horseman passed too close to her. She also has a tendency to make casually suggestive remarks. She can display a formidable side when her age is touched upon, responding with a smiling pressure that intimidates others. In the visual novel, she develops romantic feelings for Kazuto and frequently teases him, while also trying to hide her embarrassment behind a steadfast front.
Her primary motivation stems from her love for her daughter Riri and her desire to protect her. Her sense of duty and repayment of obligations is strong, as joining Shu is framed as repaying the debt of her daughter's rescue. She is motivated by a general desire for peace and order, consistent with the goals of the Shu faction under Liu Bei's virtue and harmony. Her role in the story is that of a supporting general and archer. She brings seasoned military experience and a calming, motherly presence to the group. She is relied upon by her comrades for her wisdom and care, and she is also a close friend and drinking partner of Gengan. She is affectionate and doting towards her daughter Riri, and she is often depicted as a caring mother.
Throughout the series, Kōchū shows some development in her interpersonal relationships. While initially joining out of obligation, she becomes a loyal and integrated member of Shu. In Shin Koihime Musō, she exhibits a more noticeably awkward and blushing demeanor when interacting with the protagonist, suggesting a growing romantic attachment that she struggles to reconcile with her composed exterior. She becomes more openly affectionate and teasing in her interactions over time.
Her most notable ability is her extraordinary skill with a bow. She is renowned as a master archer whose prowess is compared to Quzhang, a legendary figure sometimes called the Bow God. Her eyesight is exceptional, and she is capable of incredible accuracy even against difficult targets. Her weapon of choice is a large bow called Guhou. In the visual novel's strategic battles, she is classified as an archer unit type, and in game mechanics, she can target enemies in the rear ranks, inflict paralysis, and deal additional damage against certain elemental weaknesses. Her combat role is primarily as a ranged specialist who can strike from a distance with precision and power.
