TV-Series
Description
Kōchū Kanshō, also called Shion, hails from nobility and uniquely possesses an existing child, her daughter Riri. Her story diverges across adaptations. In the anime, bandits kidnap Riri to force Kōchū into assassinating an official targeting bandits. Kan'u and allies intervene, rescuing Riri pre-assassination, prompting Kōchū's grateful enlistment. The visual novel instead sees Enshō's forces take Riri hostage to compel Kōchū to repel Kazuto's army. While dueling Kan'u to stall, Chōun and Chōhi rescue Riri. Reunited and recognizing Kazuto's benevolence, Kōchū surrenders and pledges allegiance to him.

She embodies a gentle, polite, and caring nature, frequently acting as a maternal "team mom," offering guidance, especially to younger characters. Despite this composure, she harbors a sly streak and enjoys teasing Kazuto, sharing a mature romantic relationship with him. She views him as a husband figure and aspires to build a new family, partly fueled by his fatherly affection for Riri. Her romantic acceptance extends to Kazuto's involvements with other women in the group, and she willingly offers them romantic or sexual advice. Internally, she often loses herself in vivid forbidden love fantasies, becoming oblivious until Riri breaks her reverie.

Her calm exterior can fracture dramatically when angered. Though outwardly composed, her aura and tone turn malicious, radiating a potent "cold fury" that intimidates others into submission. The anime visually manifests this state as a demonic transformation with distinct facial markings.

Her primary expertise lies in exceptional archery. She demonstrates masterful accuracy, hitting minuscule targets from extreme distances, firing multiple arrows simultaneously, and rapidly hitting multiple targets with precision. A notable feat includes startling a distant, nearly out-of-sight crow into dropping a stolen hairpin with an arrow—a shot Kan'u deemed superhuman if intentional. This prowess is supported by enhanced physical attributes: extraordinary eyesight, concentration, and body control. She also possesses high intellect, swift situational comprehension, and wisdom derived from life experience.

Key vulnerabilities include an acute age complex, where age remarks demoralize or enrage her; a fear of thunder; unsuitability for close-quarters combat due to her specialization; and susceptibility to manipulation through threats against Riri.

Her relationships center on devotion to Riri and a close friendship with Gengan Kikyou, sharing a drinking partnership. Within the Shoku faction, she serves as a general, having joined the Hongō faction (later Shoku) following Riri's rescue in the original visual novel and subsequent games.

Her character design references Romance of the Three Kingdoms' Huang Zhong, typically an elderly general, explaining her status as a mature woman among predominantly adolescent characters. Her birthday is September 27, and she ranked third in a popularity poll for the Shoku story.
