Description
Mitsuru Hanagata is a central figure in the star of the Giants series, including Shin Kyojin no Hoshi II, where he serves as the principal rival to the protagonist Hyuma Hoshi. He comes from a wealthy background as the son of the owner of Hanagata Motors, a major automobile manufacturer. His early childhood was spent in the United Kingdom, where he developed a strong, noble spirit by fighting back against the bullying that Asian people faced. This experience shaped his resilient and proud character.

Upon returning to Japan, Hanagata took on the role of leader for a baseball team composed of juvenile delinquents, known as the Black Shadows. This team became the vehicle for his first encounters with Hyuma Hoshi, a meeting that would define his baseball career. Hanagata began as a pitching prodigy, having been the ace of his little league team and earning a place in the prestigious Little League World Series. However, the relentless strain of pitching caused a shoulder injury that forced him to give up pitching permanently. Realizing he could never throw again, he reinvented himself as a batter, channeling his natural talent and fierce determination into becoming a genius hitter.

Hanagata is defined by his intense competitive spirit and an unwavering desire to defeat Hyuma Hoshi, whom he regards as his destined rival. In Shin Kyojin no Hoshi II, this rivalry reaches the professional stage. After their high school years at Koshien, Hanagata joins the Hanshin Tigers as a professional player, while Hyuma plays for the Yomiuri Giants. Their on-field battles are the core of the story, with each man constantly pushing the other to greater heights. Hanagata plays first base, bats and throws right-handed, and is known for his aggressive playing style. He is a genius who burns with excessive fighting spirit, especially during intense confrontations. His character was modeled after the real-life Hanshin Tigers pitcher Minoru Murayama.

Throughout the series, Hanagata’s development is marked by his transition from a gifted but injured pitcher to a formidable batter and professional star. His motivations are driven by pride, the need to prove himself after his injury, and the deep personal rivalry with Hyuma. Notable actions include sending a bloodstained ball to the Yomiuri Giants in an attempt to draw attention to Hyuma’s determination, though this act inadvertently caused problems for his rival. Hanagata’s role in Shin Kyojin no Hoshi II is that of an enduring and worthy opponent, whose presence forces Hyuma to continually improve and whose own growth mirrors the themes of perseverance and ambition that run throughout the series.
