Description
Mitsuru Hanagata, heir to the Hanagata Motors automobile empire, endured a childhood in the United Kingdom marred by bullying due to his Asian heritage. This adversity ignited a fierce competitive spirit, propelling him to master sports like soccer, horseback riding, fencing, and tennis. His achievements culminated in an audience with Queen Elizabeth II. Returning to Japan disillusioned by his homeland's fading cultural pride and distant family life, he embraced delinquency in elementary school—illegally driving sports cars and founding the Black Shadows baseball team with fellow delinquents. During this period, he first clashed with Hyūma Hoshi, who shattered Hanagata's signature "Knockout Batting" technique, cementing Hyūma as his eternal rival.

Hanagata enrolled at Kōyō High School in Kanagawa Prefecture, determined to build its baseball team into a Kōshien contender. He attempted to support Hyūma's education by offering tuition through Hyūma's sister Akiko, sparking conflict when Hyūma refused. Their rivalry escalated during a Kōyō-Seiun High game, where Hanagata arranged a radio broadcast to ensure Hyūma's participation. The inconclusive match resulted from Seiun's errors and Hanagata's interference. At the Kōshien finals, Hanagata hit a game-winning home run off an injured Hyūma, unaware of the injury. Discovering the truth via the bloodied ball, he publicly embraced Hyūma in admiration—an act that inadvertently triggered Seiun's team disbandment and Hyūma's expulsion.

Learning of the expulsion, Hanagata sent the bloodstained ball to the Yomiuri Giants to aid Hyūma's recruitment. Instead, it intensified Giants manager Kawakami's disdain for Hyūma. Hanagata joined the Hanshin Tigers, inheriting the permanent number "10" jersey, while Hyūma signed with the Giants. Professionally, Hanagata initially dominated Hyūma's pitching until the "Major League Ball Right 1" fastball plunged him into a slump. To conquer it, he underwent brutal training at a Hanagata Motors subcontractor factory, swinging an iron bat at iron balls. This allowed him to homer off Hyūma's new pitch but shattered bones in his upper body.

In *Shin Kyojin no Hoshi II*, Hanagata sustains his professional rivalry with Hyūma through fierce on-field battles, his relentless drive to defeat Hyūma defining his character. The 2002 spin-off *Special Edition: Fierce Tiger Mitsuru Hanagata* reframes the narrative from his perspective, elaborating on his UK childhood, leadership of the Black Shadows, and complex dynamic with Akiko Hoshi. It explores his internal struggles and reinforces his Tigers career, positioning his rivalry with Hyūma as the crucible forging his identity as an aggressive hitter.
