Description
Chūta Ban, son of Ban Automotive Industry president Daizō Ban and beneficiary of his father's major sponsorship of Seiun High School, initially wields this influence to dominate the school's judo club as a three-time national champion. Simultaneously, he acts as the baseball team's "Demon Cheerleader," enforcing brutal training regimens to bully its members. A pivotal encounter occurs during high school entrance exams when Hyūma Hoshi confronts Ban, criticizing his reliance on paternal status over personal merit – a critique that profoundly impacts Ban. Recognizing potential in Hyūma, Ban facilitates his enrollment at Seiun to rival Mitsuru Hanagata, heir to a competing automaker.

Ban subsequently subjects Hyūma to extreme endurance drills during baseball practice. However, witnessing Hyūma's unwavering determination during joint training fosters a growing respect. This culminates when Ban, an amateur catcher, endures repeated injuries to successfully catch Hyūma's devastating fastball. Prompting a transfer to the baseball club, he forms a battery partnership with Hyūma. His personality shifts from arrogance to sportsmanship, leading him to reject the judo club's attempts to reclaim him. As a right-handed catcher, Ban displays rough defensive skills but compensates by occasionally unleashing powerful home runs, leveraging his judo-honed athleticism. These sporadic offensive bursts earn him nicknames like "Ban gōketsu" (伴豪傑).

Throughout high school, Ban supports Hyūma's development of specialized pitches like the "Dai League Ball" through rigorous training methods, including catching blindfolded pitches and targeting small objects such as a 50-yen coin. Post-graduation, both join the Yomiuri Giants, though Ban primarily serves as a substitute catcher. His fierce loyalty compels him to shadow Hyūma between the first and second teams during Hyūma's disciplinary stints. A turning point arrives when Hyūma's father, Ittetsu Hoshi, engineers Ban's trade to the Chunichi Dragons, believing Ban's latent batting potential outweighs his role as Hyūma's catcher. Ban initially resists, perceiving betrayal, but relents after intervention by Hyūma's sister Akiko, who invokes Jean Cocteau's advice against youthful "safe stocks."

Under Ittetsu's guidance with the Dragons, Ban revives his high school-era ferocious hitting, despite prior unsuccessful efforts by Hyūma to refine his batting during their Giants tenure. Years later, he returns with Hyūma to Seiun High anniversary events, challenging judo members to catch Hyūma's pitches as mental discipline. His legacy charts a path from entitlement to self-made resilience, defined by rivalry, mentorship, and unwavering loyalty.
