Description
Ittetsu Hoshi is the father of Hyūma and Akiko Hoshi. His baseball career began with the Yomiuri Giants, registered as a player from 1942 to 1948, but a shoulder injury sustained during World War II prevented any game appearances and ended his playing days. In a desperate attempt to continue, he developed the intimidating and dangerous "Devil's Fastball" (魔速球), only for Giants manager Tetsuharu Kawakami to condemn it as dishonorable, forcing Ittetsu's retirement.

After retiring and losing his wife Harue, Ittetsu descended into alcoholism and poverty, working as a day laborer in Doya-gai. He channeled his unrealized baseball ambitions into training his son Hyūma from early childhood using extreme and cruel methods. These included forcing the naturally right-handed Hyūma to become left-handed for all activities, imposing the restrictive "Dai League Ball Training Cast" that stunted Hyūma's physical growth, and using gasoline-soaked flaming baseballs during batting practice to hone reflexes. This harsh training bred deep resentment in Hyūma towards both baseball and his father.

During Hyūma's time at Seiun High School, Ittetsu accepted a coaching position there through the influence of sponsor Daizō Ban. He retired just before the Tokyo tournament, believing the team ready for the Kōshien championships. Later, in the 1968 off-season, he rejected an offer to coach the Giants' second team and joined the Chunichi Dragons as a coach. His jersey number, 84, symbolized his relationship with Hyūma; adding it to Hyūma's Giants number 16 equaled 100, representing "perfection" to Ittetsu. His coaching focused on developing rivals to challenge Hyūma, including acquiring American batter Ozuma and orchestrating a trade that sent Hyūma's close friend and battery partner, Chūta Ban, to the Dragons. Ittetsu subjected Ban to brutal training to forge him into Hyūma's on-field adversary.

Ittetsu's philosophy emphasized relentless struggle and self-sacrifice, expressed through metaphors like the phoenix rising from ashes ("become a phoenix... even if you fall into fire and become ashes, revive more powerfully") and samurai lore. His harsh methods culminated in the final showdown between Hyūma and Ban, where Ittetsu acknowledged Hyūma's victory as born from life-risking dedication. A reconciliation occurred when Ittetsu carried the injured Hyūma off the field after this battle.

In later continuations like *Shin Kyojin no Hoshi*, Ittetsu resurfaced as Hyūma's coach after Hyūma attempted a comeback from a career-ending injury. The OVA *Father Ittetsu* (2007) explored his backstory further, including wartime experiences and the origins of his baseball obsession. His character remained defined by an unwavering commitment to his ideals, often at significant personal and emotional cost to himself and his family.
