Description
Michiru Kaioh is the civilian identity of Sailor Neptune, a character who first appears in season three of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, which adapts the Infinity arc of the original manga. She is one of the Outer Sailor Guardians, a group of warriors who protect the Solar System from threats that originate beyond its boundaries. As the Guardian of the Deep Seas, her powers are tied to the ocean and draw strength from the planet Neptune. She is reincarnated from a past life as a warrior of the Silver Millennium, the ancient kingdom on the Moon.

Michiru is introduced as a sixteen-year-old student at the prestigious Mugen Academy. She is already well known in cultural circles as a virtuoso violinist who performs internationally and as a talented painter whose work is exhibited in galleries. She lives independently, supported by wealthy patrons, and carries herself with an air of sophistication and composure. Her appearance is marked by long, wavy turquoise or green hair and matching eyes.

In terms of personality, Michiru is elegant, calm, and reserved. She rarely reveals what she is thinking and can come across as distant or even cold, especially when focused on her mission. Beneath this exterior, she possesses a deep kindness that is described as being as vast as the sea. She has a sharp tongue and is not afraid to offer blunt, logical criticism to allies and enemies alike. She also has a subtle, dry sense of humor and enjoys teasing her partner, Haruka Tenoh. Unlike the inner Sailor Guardians, Michiru and Haruka are more calculating and pragmatic in battle, often devising strategies in secret and executing them without sharing the full plan until necessary. Michiru is fully dedicated to her duty as a Sailor Guardian and places the protection of the Solar System above personal considerations.

Her motivations stem from her sense of responsibility as an Outer Guardian. Alongside Haruka, she believes they must make difficult choices that the inner Guardians might not understand, including the willingness to eliminate threats without hesitation. This mindset sometimes puts her at odds with Sailor Moon and her friends, who prioritize compassion and redemption. Over the course of season three, she gradually comes to respect Sailor Moon's approach and accepts her as their leader.

Michiru's role in the story is that of a key ally who initially operates independently from the main group. She and Haruka are the first to detect the emergence of the Death Busters, a new enemy faction targeting humans with potential for great power. They work to thwart the Death Busters' plans while guarding a set of powerful artifacts known as the Talismans. Michiru wields one of these Talismans, the Deep Aqua Mirror, which grants her precognitive abilities and can reveal hidden truths. She later helps protect and care for Hotaru Tomoe, a girl at the center of the conflict who becomes the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn.

The most significant relationship in Michiru's life is with Haruka Tenoh, Sailor Uranus. They are partners in both duty and romance, forming a deeply connected couple. Their bond is one of mutual trust and understanding, and they often act as a single unit in battle and in their personal lives. Michiru also develops a supportive relationship with the other Outer Guardians, Setsuna Meioh and later Hotaru Tomoe, and eventually earns the respect and friendship of the inner Guardians, particularly Usagi Tsukino.

Over the course of season three, Michiru shows some development as she learns to balance her rigid sense of duty with empathy. While she remains pragmatic, she becomes more open to collaboration and softens her stance toward the inner Guardians. Her unwavering commitment to her role, however, remains a constant part of her character.

Michiru possesses several notable abilities. As Sailor Neptune, she can manipulate and control the sea and ocean, molding water into various forms for attack and defense. Her primary attack is Deep Submerge, which summons a powerful torrent of water to engulf her enemies. She also has access to the Deep Aqua Mirror, a talisman that allows her to see into the future or locate distant objects and people. In addition, she has strong psychic or sixth-sense abilities, which she uses to sense danger before it manifests. Her powers are distinct from those of Sailor Mercury, as Neptune's domain is the ocean itself rather than water in a general sense. As a Sailor Guardian, she can transform using a henshin pen and carries the power of her home planet.
