TV Special
Description
Sagaru Yamazaki operates as a Shinsengumi spy, utilizing his deliberately plain and unremarkable appearance to blend in during undercover work. He originated as "Mountain Zaki," a punk leader with a green mohawk who ran a small gang before joining the early Shinsengumi. After trying to attack Kondo Isao, Kondo's strength and wisdom inspired Yamazaki's reform and dedicated service under him.

Typically sporting neck-length black hair and the standard lower-rank Shinsengumi uniform off-duty, he wears a kimono and hakama. His design frequently alters for comedic effect, forcing hairstyles like a mohawk, afro, or blond dye. A virus during the Dekoboko Arc temporarily transformed him into a female version featuring longer hair in pigtails and a bust.

Reserved and often describing himself as "very plain," Yamazaki harbors a fervent passion for badminton and kabaddi. He frequently neglects duties to practice, earning physical punishment from Vice-Commander Hijikata Toushirou. On stakeouts, he ritually consumes anpan with milk as a sacrifice to the "stakeout god," despite professing to hate it. His surveillance reports digress into personal musings, accidentally disclosing private details like his crush on the android Tama, sparked by witnessing her kindness to a malfunctioning scanner.

In combat, Yamazaki wields the Osafune Mark II sword with competent swordsmanship. His core skills are infiltration and surveillance, aided by his unremarkable looks. He occasionally weaponizes anpan, notably when apprehending fugitive Narasaki Donbei.

Within the Shinsengumi, Yamazaki maintains fierce loyalty to Kondo while enduring frequent abuse from Hijikata. He shares camaraderie with Shimura Shinpachi over their mutual "plainness," though Yamazaki is often more overlooked. His interactions with Okita Sougo are minimal or indifferent. Externally, he collaborates with the ninja Hattori Zenzou and pursues his feelings for Tama, abandoning missions to observe her.

Significant developments include his near-fatal injury during the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, spared by Kawakami Bansai to "listen to his song." Presumed dead, his funeral was overshadowed by a dog's memorial. Post-timeskip, he reemerged as the enhanced, aggressive cyborg "Demon Vice-Commander Jimmy," later revealed to be under parasitic control. Liberated, he regained his original personality. In the Character Poll Arc, he manipulated rankings by inciting infighting, briefly placing himself and Shinpachi at the top. His final canonical state involves splitting into multiple clones with distinct personalities, including his pre-cyborg self.

His missions—spying on Yorozuya, investigating the Mamushi factory during the Memory Loss Arc, or infiltrating the Yagyuu household—consistently blend duty with comedic mishaps, cementing his role as a dedicated yet perpetually overlooked agent.
