OVA
Description
Nanael is a character from the Queen's Blade franchise, including the OVA series Vanquished Queens. She is a guardian angel who descends to the mortal world, presenting herself as a messenger from Heaven sent to bring true order. In reality, she is an underachieving angel dropout who was placed on probation and exiled to Earth due to her repeated irresponsible and incompetent behavior in the celestial realm. As part of her trial, she is given a vial of holy milk that she is forbidden to spill, with her strength directly tied to how much of the liquid remains. Spilling it causes her to grow weaker.

In terms of personality, Nanael is outwardly friendly, cheerful, and somewhat airheaded, but this demeanor masks a deeply arrogant and self-serving nature. She harbors a strong sense of superiority over all earthly beings, referring to humans as monkeys and refusing to treat them as equals. Her true motivations are selfish: she secretly wishes to create her own kingdom on Earth where men serve angels and women are banished. She is also lazy, manipulative, and willing to take advantage of others' kindness, as seen in her relationship with the kind nun Melpha, whom she exploits for food and lodging. Despite her incompetence, she possesses a devious streak and is not above scheming to get what she wants, including trapping people or concocting plans to achieve her goals.

In the story of Vanquished Queens, Nanael has been promoted to the rank of archangel after her earlier misadventures, a promotion largely attributed to her forming a bond with Melpha, which the celestial authorities deemed a valuable achievement. This promotion only inflates her arrogance further. Her role in the narrative involves overseeing an angel apprentice named Laila, whose progress is slow. Nanael devises a scheme she calls a miracle of reversal, intending to unlock Laila's latent potential by unleashing a divine punishment titan named Helosium upon the earthly city. This reckless plan forces a desperate alliance between the undead spirit Airi and the angels to contain the catastrophe. Nanael's role highlights her continued irresponsibility and the unintended consequences of her meddling, as her actions put both heaven and earth at risk.

Key relationships include her subordinate apprentice Laila, whom she uses as a tool for her schemes. She also has a noted connection to Melpha, the holy woman who showed her kindness and inadvertently helped her earn her promotion, though Nanael mostly freeloaded off her. She shows a particular interest in the dynamic between Leina and Claudette Vance, and she is protective of Leina in her own way. Her relationship with other angels, particularly the archangel who assigns her tasks, is strained due to her repeated failures.

Regarding development, Nanael's promotion to archangel does little to change her fundamental character. She remains arrogant, lazy, and prone to causing chaos. Her respect for celestial hierarchy grows, but her attitude toward humans remains condescending, and her schemes continue to backfire, forcing her into situations where she must cooperate with beings she considers inferior.

Nanael is a capable fighter when she chooses to be, though she considers fighting seriously against lower beings beneath her dignity. Her primary weapon is the Celestial Sabre, which she controls telekinetically, allowing her to attack from a distance. She also possesses powerful close-range techniques, such as the Falling Star Kick. As an angel, her natural power exceeds that of most humans, though her effectiveness is hampered by her own laziness and the holy milk handicap. Her appearance is marked by short blue hair, green eyes, and asymmetrical wings, a feature she is sensitive about. She wears the standard white angelic uniform with a skirt, steel leggings, and gauntlets, and carries the holy milk vial at her waist.
