Description
Junk Dog, also known as Gearless Joe and later Nomad, is an underground boxer whose real name remains undisclosed. Originating from an unspecified background with no known family or formal identity, he survives in the slums, taking temporary shelter and participating in rigged fights organized by his manager, Gansaku Nanbu. This period earned him the alias "Junk Dog," reflecting his status as an undervalued fighter forced to lose matches for criminal syndicates—a role fueling his resentment towards fixed outcomes and authority figures.
Physically tall and muscular with dark olive skin, he has prominent black hair and thick eyebrows. His body bears extensive scarring: a horizontal scar on his left cheek from an early encounter with Yuri, a J-shaped scar on his right jaw, and multiple X-shaped scars across his torso and limbs from boxing injuries. During his underground years, he typically wore a green military jacket with a sergeant's badge, a dark red shirt, and combat boots. As Gearless Joe, his attire simplified to boxing trunks and gloves, deliberately fighting without mechanical enhancements ("Gear"). In his Nomad phase, he adopted a disheveled appearance with a full beard to conceal his identity, along with worn clothing and modified Gear inscribed with "NOMAD".
His personality blends a laid-back exterior with intense determination. He exhibits a Blood Knight mentality, prioritizing genuine challenges over financial gain or fame, and openly rejects fixed matches. Keen observational skills allow him to read opponents' emotions and tactics during fights. After winning the Megalonia tournament, he abandoned celebrity status to live humbly with Nanbu and Sachio. Seven years later, following Nanbu's death, he descended into depression and addiction, using painkillers to cope with guilt and physical pain. This period saw him adopt a self-destructive, nomadic lifestyle, battling a Death Seeker impulse while remaining unable to quit boxing entirely.
His boxing style relies on resilience, adaptability, and counter-attacks rather than technical finesse. Initially fighting with dilapidated Gear in underground rings, he gained renown as "Gearless Joe" by eschewing mechanical enhancements in official matches, using only standard gloves and trunks. His abilities include exceptional durability (withstanding Gear-enhanced strikes), superhuman speed and reflexes (dodging close-range attacks), and powerful precision striking (notably liver blows). His fighting spirit enables him to endure extreme punishment and rally from near-defeat. In his Nomad era, his skills deteriorated due to drug use and psychological trauma, though he regained form after confronting his past and adopting new Gear provided by a boxer named Chief.
His development spans two primary arcs. In the first, a chance defeat by champion Yuri ignited his ambition to compete in Megalonia. Using a forged ID to enter as "Joe," he climbed the ranks through sheer tenacity, defeating top fighters like Aragaki and Mikio Shirai before overcoming Yuri in a 13-round knockout. This victory symbolized his triumph over systemic marginalization. Post-tournament, he rejected fame for anonymity.
The second arc, set seven years later, depicts his fall and redemption. Haunted by guilt over Nanbu's death and abandoning Sachio, he became a drifting addict ("Nomad"), fighting underground while dependent on painkillers. His path to recovery began when aiding Chief, an immigrant boxer facing exploitation. Mentoring Chief and confronting his trauma, he gradually atoned for past neglect. He shaved his beard and cut his hair, symbolizing renewal, and returned to professional boxing not for glory but as personal penance. By journey's end, he achieved emotional reconciliation, moving beyond self-destructive cycles.
