Description
Backbeard is a powerful Western yōkai and a major antagonist in the GeGeGe no Kitarō series, originally created by Shigeru Mizuki. He is an American yōkai, making him distinct from the primarily Japanese yōkai that populate most of the series. His design is iconic and bizarre: he typically appears as a large black or dark sphere with a single giant eye at its center, surrounded by numerous short, root-like tentacles that sprout from the edges of his body. The coloration of his eye and body has varied across different adaptations, ranging from a red iris with a yellow sclera to more elaborate designs with violet veins. In the sixth anime series, his form is notably more abstract, with tentacles that resemble cracks in the sky, and he also gains the ability to assume a temporary, green-skinned humanoid shape.
Backbeard’s personality is defined by immense pride, egoism, and a ruthless, social Darwinist worldview. He firmly believes that the strong have an inherent right to dominate and that the weak are unworthy of existence, a philosophy that fuels his contempt for Japanese yōkai, whom he dismisses as inferior. Despite his arrogance, he is pragmatic and will show surprising obedience when faced with an even greater power, as seen when he backs down from a confrontation with the powerful yōkai Akashita. His cruelty is profound; he shows no loyalty to his subordinates, readily sacrificing them to further his ambitions, and takes pleasure in inflicting both physical and psychological pain.
His primary motivation is the establishment of a global yōkai empire under his rule. This goal is most fully realized in the sixth anime with the Brigadoon Project, a scheme to strip all yōkai and transformed humans of their free will, turning them into mindless, obedient subjects. To this end, he relentlessly pursues the powerful Ring of Arcana, a treasure of the Western yōkai world. In earlier stories, his motivations were more direct, such as invading an island to create a yōkai nation or simply proving Western superiority.
Within the story, Backbeard serves as the supreme commander of the Western yōkai, often leading a cohort that includes classic monsters like Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, and witches. His role is primarily that of a recurring major antagonist and rival to Kitarō, though it fluctuates. He is the central villain in several story arcs, such as the original The Great Yōkai War, but has also appeared as a rival competitor in events like the Yōkai Rally car race. On rare occasions, his role shifts to that of an unlikely ally. In certain manga chapters like Kitarō's Vietnam War and Yōkai Lockheed, he cooperates with Medama-Oyaji to help Kitarō, showcasing a pragmatic and situational side to his character, even if he retains his malicious tendencies.
Backbeard’s key relationships are defined by power and utility. He is the master to a host of Western yōkai, including the witches Agnes and Adel, whom he manipulates ruthlessly for the Brigadoon Project. His primary adversary is Kitarō, who repeatedly thwarts his plans, leading to a long-standing rivalry. He also shares a notable, though not always hostile, connection with Kitarō's father, Medama-Oyaji, who has been both his enemy and, in rare instances, his ally. Throughout his many appearances, Backbeard shows little character development in the sense of changing his core nature; instead, his role adapts to the needs of the story, ranging from a world-conquering emperor to a boastful sportsman. However, the sixth anime provides a deeper exploration of his tyrannical nature and grand ambitions.
Backbeard possesses a formidable array of abilities, all centered on his singular giant eye. His most famous power is hypnosis; his gaze can induce intense dizziness in anyone who looks into his eye, making them lose their balance, fall, or become completely disoriented. He can also use his eye to fire powerful energy beams capable of causing explosions, setting targets on fire, and generating lightning. Beyond his optical powers, his tentacles are versatile weapons, strong enough to be hardened like steel, elastic like rubber, and capable of stabbing, binding, and capturing foes. He can also sprout additional limbs, such as arms and legs, when the situation requires it, like in a sumo match. In the 2018 anime, his abilities are expanded even further, granting him powers like teleportation, telekinesis, and a form of regeneration.
