TV-Series
Description
Backbeard stands as the supreme antagonist of the series, acknowledged as the most powerful yōkai across western nations. He rules as the absolute leader of the Western Yōkai, commanding unwavering loyalty from followers like the witches Adél and Agnès, whom he meticulously trained to execute his will via the Brigadoon Project. This scheme harnesses the Ring of Arcana—powered by the witches' life force—to forcibly transform humans into compliant yōkai, stripping them of free will to build his envisioned "Backbeard Empire" where even yōkai-born beings face enslavement. His ultimate ambition is global conquest, beginning with the Japanese Isles.

His signature appearance manifests as a colossal, spherical black form dominated by a single central eye encircled by a colored eyelid and short, root-like tentacles. Design specifics evolve across adaptations: earlier versions feature light grey skin and a lighter iris, while later depictions present a yellow sclera and red iris, sometimes with a visible pupil, alongside tentacles varying in length and texture. In the sixth anime, his eyelid appears green, his eye displays violet veins and a dark ring, and his tentacles evoke cracks in the sky. Backbeard can also adopt a physical guise—a towering, grotesque humanoid cyclops with black, green-tinted skin resembling raw tissue. After revival, his body reverts to a fleshy texture with elongated tentacles.

His personality blends intense pride, moodiness, and an unyielding social darwinist creed. He harbors profound contempt for perceived weakness, especially deriding Japanese yōkai as inferior, and champions the belief that the strong possess an inherent right to dominate while the weak merit death. Despite demanding absolute fealty, he feels no emotional bond to his followers, readily sacrificing Adél and Agnès' own mother to secure the Ring of Arcana. He manipulates and injures subordinates to advance his goals, exemplified by forcing Agnès to become the Brigadoon Project's core through Adél's torture. Backbeard savors his hierarchical supremacy among Western Yōkai and openly admires adversaries demonstrating significant power, such as Agnès wielding the Ring against him. His traits mirror a fusion of his followers' key aspects: Wolfgang's disdain for weakness, Carmilla's sadism, Victor Frankenstein's immorality, Adél's tactical intellect, and Agnès' mystical mastery. In his physical form, he takes visceral pleasure in inflicting pain.

Backbeard's narrative centers on the Brigadoon Project. A millennium past, he battled a formidable foe in his physical form. Years before the main events, he groomed the witch family—Adél, Agnès, and their mother—exploiting Agnès' magical potential. He commanded their mother's sacrifice to transmute the Malay Peninsula into part of his empire, simultaneously eradicating rebellious local yōkai. In the 2018 anime, he first materializes scolding Adél for losing the Ring of Arcana's signal, ordering its retrieval and igniting the Great Yōkai War. He later manifests above GeGeGe Forest with his inner circle (Adél, Wolfgang, Carmilla, Victor Frankenstein), unleashing destruction until repelled by Agnès wielding the Ring. He subsequently recruits the Western Akuma Belial to reclaim the Ring and tests Agnès' powers by imprisoning her within his eye. Confirming her readiness, he initiates the Brigadoon Project in Japan. During the final clash, he overpowers Kitarō, tortures Adél to compel Agnès' submission, and activates the human transformation. His failure to perceive Adél's enduring spirit allows Kitarō's recovery and disrupts the project. Backbeard meets defeat when forced back into his physical form, though he vows an inevitable return.
