Description
Konaki Jijii is a yokai and a long-standing, powerful ally of Kitaro in the film Gegege no Kitaro: Saikyo Yokai Gundan! Nihon Joriuku!!. He is based on a traditional folkloric yokai from the Awa region, present-day Tokushima, who is said to lure travelers with the sound of a crying infant before crushing them with an impossibly heavy weight. In his depicted appearance, he is a small, elderly yokai standing around 140 centimeters tall, with a wrinkled, baby-like face, a sparse white beard, and attire consisting of a traditional straw raincoat and a belly-warmer.
His personality is defined by a strong duality. On a surface level, he is a comedic figure with a deep fondness for sake, a quick temper, and a tendency toward laziness and impatience. He frequently bickers with his longtime companion Sunakake Babaa, and his drinking often leads to trouble. However, this exterior masks a deeply protective and fiercely loyal nature. He is a staunch guardian of the human world and harbors immense pride in his identity as a Japanese yokai. His primary motivation is the defense of his friends and the natural order, driven by a sense of duty and a long life of experience.
In the specific narrative of this film, Konaki Jijii is thrust into a front-line leadership role. When the Chinese yokai Chi invades Japan and transforms Kitaro, along with several other key allies, into enchanted bolts of cloth, Konaki Jijii is chosen as the commander of the remaining Japanese yokai resistance. He takes charge of the desperate situation, organizing the scattered forces, devising strategies to assault Chi's fortress, and personally leading the counterattack. His role shifts from a background ally to a central commander and a primary combatant in the final battle, where he directly engages high-ranking enemy yokai.
His most defining relationship is with Sunakake Babaa. They function as an inseparable and frequently bickering old couple, and their partnership is vital to the film's conflict, as they coordinate the yokai army side-by-side. He also acts as a fatherly elder to the younger members of the group and a trusted lieutenant to Kitaro. The film serves as a significant showcase of his development, revealing his capacity for responsibility, strategic thinking, and heroic sacrifice, firmly establishing that beneath his idle and comedic demeanor lies a formidable and dependable warrior.
Konaki Jijii's signature ability is the power to petrify his body. By transforming his flesh into dense stone, he can dramatically multiply his weight. Offensively, he uses this by clinging to an opponent and releasing a crying sound, causing his mass to increase until the target is crushed. In the film, this specific technique is named the Konaki Tsubushi. Defensively, his stone form grants him immense durability, allowing him to withstand powerful explosions and heavy impacts. He exhibits fine control over this ability, using it to smash through structures, anchor himself against powerful forces, or wage war as a living battering ram.
