Konaki Jijii, known as Crybaby Geezer or Crying Old Man, is a yōkai from Japanese folklore. He deceives travelers by mimicking a baby's cry, luring them in his infant form before drastically increasing his weight to crush those who pick him up. This legend is especially linked to the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture.
Within the *Gegege no Kitarō* series, he is a 3,100-year-old male yōkai. His appearance combines a baby's body with the face of an elderly man, characterized by drooping eyebrows and a mustache. He typically wears a Kintarō apron and a mino (straw raincoat); some versions depict him with a blackened front tooth. His height is consistently 140 cm, while his weight fluctuates significantly from 25 kg to over 2 tons due to his powers.
His primary abilities involve manipulating his own weight and transforming his body into stone, allowing him to immobilize and crush opponents. When fully petrified, his durability increases substantially, enabling him to withstand high-level attacks, though he becomes immobile. He also possesses standard yōkai traits including invisibility, low-level regeneration, and immunity to blood manipulation. His combat speed is comparable to other high-tier characters, classified as Massively Hypersonic+. However, his constant drunkenness and susceptibility to manipulation while intoxicated often hinder his effectiveness.
Konaki Jijii debuted in the 1961 manga story "A Walk to Hell" and first appeared animated in Episode 7 of the 1968 anime. A pivotal moment occurs during "The Great Yōkai War" storyline, where he sacrifices himself to defeat a Western yōkai—drowning Wolfman (anime) or Frankenstein (manga) by increasing his weight on a raft. He is later killed by Dracula in the anime or under ambiguous circumstances in the manga. Despite this confirmed death, he reappears in subsequent episodes, becoming a recurring ally.
His relationship with the sand-throwing yōkai Sunakake-Babaa is consistent across media. They frequently work as a team, leading to fan speculation about a romantic or marital bond. While never explicitly confirmed in the original manga or anime, narratives like *Yōkai Sen Monogatari* acknowledge their romantic connection, and Sunakake-Babaa exhibits jealousy when he interacts with other female characters.
Outside the main series, Konaki Jijii appears in spin-offs and adaptations. He is playable in games such as *Mizuki Shigeru no Youkai Butouden* (PlayStation) and *Gegege no Kitaro* (Game Boy Advance), where his abilities are used in combat. In the live-action series *Ninja Sentai Kakuranger*, he is portrayed as a soul-stealing monster using his infant form to trap victims, though this iteration is distinct from the *GeGeGe no Kitarō* canon.
Later adaptations expand his traits. The fourth anime series reveals he owns sophisticated possessions, including a personal computer and fine clothing, and has accumulated significant wealth. *Kitarō Kunitori Monogatari* shows he is distantly related to a human politician, Deputy Prime Minister Kinkaku, who acknowledges their kinship. The fifth anime emphasizes his advanced age, depicting him with reduced endurance and frequent sleepiness.
