Description
Mana Inuyama is a human girl and one of the main characters in the sixth anime series. She begins the story as a thirteen-year-old middle school student living in Tokyo with her parents. Her surname, Inuyama, was chosen to contrast with the cat-like Neko Musume, and her given name, Mana, written with the characters for true name, was given to her by her great-grandmother, a former spiritual practitioner. She has fair skin, brown hair worn in a short ponytail tied on the left side, and blue eyes. She frequently changes her casual outfits and has a quirky taste in accessories, using smartphone cases decorated with images of a large Buddha or a comic-style meat bone.

Her personality is defined by a strong sense of justice, curiosity, and a warm, outgoing nature. She treats everyone without prejudice and is quick to help those in trouble, whether human or妖怪. This same strong-willed and sometimes impulsive side can lead her into dangerous situations, as she often acts on instinct before thinking through the consequences. She can be quick-tempered with her classmates, but she deeply values her friendships. Her courage and selflessness are clear when, even after being captured, she asks for other kidnapped children to be rescued before herself.

Her initial motivation stems from a natural curiosity about the strange events occurring in her city. After writing a letter to the yokai postbox, she meets Kitaro and becomes fascinated by the hidden world of妖怪. Her desire to understand them and to help bridge the gap between humans and妖怪 drives her throughout the series. She is not content to simply observe; she actively seeks to learn more and to assist Kitaro and his family.

In the story, she serves as the human point of view, representing how modern humanity can coexist with the supernatural. She is not a fighter and has no supernatural combat ability, but her role is crucial in many confrontations. She possesses what is called accidental luck, a remarkable ability to be in the right place at the right time or to trigger a chain of events that reveals an enemy's weakness or provides a solution to a problem. For example, she might trip over a bottle that ends up harming a yokai, or happen to have her father's architectural blueprints for a building that becomes a key location. She also becomes a vessel for powerful spiritual energy, as she is targeted by the antagonist named Namashi to become an empty vessel. Five elemental curses are placed on her body, and when they are completed, the energy formed is used in the final battle. Despite lacking personal strength, her presence is often the deciding factor in victories.

Her key relationships are central to her development. With Kitaro, she initially faces his reluctance to involve humans in妖怪 affairs. After proving her resolve and saving him, she earns his friendship and trust, and they become close allies. With Neko Musume, their relationship starts with jealousy and tension but grows into a deep, sisterly bond. Mana comes to admire and respect Neko Musume, calling her big sister cat, and Neko Musume becomes one of her most protective friends. She also forms friendships with other妖怪 such as Sunakake Baba, Nurikabe, and even the trickster Nezumi Otoko, and she helps the witch Agnes open up to human friendship.

Her development is significant. She begins as an ordinary girl unaware of the supernatural, unable to even see妖怪. Through her encounters, she not only gains the ability to perceive them but also learns about the complexities and prejudices between the two worlds. The storyline involving Namashi forces her to confront deep despair, hatred, and guilt after she is manipulated into harming Neko Musume. She overcomes this darkness by remembering her bonds and, in a moment of profound empathy, she helps Namashi find peace by offering him gratitude and a name, understanding his pain. She matures from a curious girl into a brave and compassionate young woman who actively works to protect the friendship between humans and妖怪. In the final episode, she sacrifices her memories of her time with the妖怪 to save Kitaro, and years later, she regains them, reconnecting with all her friends.
