Description
Mana Inuyama is a 13-year-old human student in class 1-A from Tokyo's Chofu City, featured in the 2018 anime series adaptation. She lives with parents Junko and Yūichi Inuyama and visits her uncle, aunt, and great-aunt in Sakaiminato each summer. Her ancestry connects directly to Fuku, whose unborn child Nanashi amassed centuries of malice before choosing Mana as its spiritual vessel. This lineage infuses her with latent supernatural abilities through Nanashi's concealed influence.

Visually distinctive with fair skin, brown hair in a left-sided ponytail, and blue eyes, Mana consistently wears a white hairpin featuring a pink circle above her left ear. Her casual outfits favor cat-themed t-shirts and shorts, while her school uniform pairs a white collared shirt and blue skirt with a tie, navy socks, and brown shoes. She adds a light teal jacket in colder weather.

Mana radiates curiosity, cheerfulness, and bravery. Initially unaware of yōkai, she grows fascinated after meeting Kitarō's group and champions human-yōkai coexistence. Her courage emerges in life-threatening situations, like saving Kitarō and Agnès during the Brigadoon Project. Empathetic to unspoken intentions, she once discerned Adél's true motives through expressions alone. Protective yet impulsive, she confronted Rei Isurugi over his treatment of yōkai.

Her evolving abilities include:
- Spiritual Awareness: Perceiving supernatural entities after accepting yōkai existence.
- Witch's Kiss: A protective spell from Agnès granting immunity to effects like the Brigadoon Project and access to GeGeGe Forest.
- Defensive Force: Malice-induced blasts capable of annihilating yōkai souls, initially involuntary but later controlled.
- Elemental Seals: Five Wu Xing-based seals (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) placed by Nanashi, occasionally aligning her powers with these elements.

Key relationships define her journey:
- Kitarō: Friendship begins with his protection from Nobiagari, evolving into trusted alliance despite initial distance.
- Neko-Musume: Bonds form after rescue from Miage-Nyūdō, with Mana affectionately calling her "Neko-neesan." Their connection shatters when Nanashi manipulates Neko-Musume into attacking Mana's mother, triggering Mana's defensive force to accidentally destroy Neko-Musume's soul.
- Agnès: Mana befriends the reluctant witch, their alliance crucial against Victor Frankenstein and the Brigadoon Project.
- Nanashi: As Fuku's malice-filled descendant targeting Mana, their conflict resolves when Mana comforts it and bestows its first name.
- Rei Isurugi: Mana challenges his anti-yōkai ideology after he extracts Sunakake-Babaa's soul, later learning through him about Kitarō's bargain with Enma-Daiō.

Major story arcs position her as an audience surrogate rediscovering Kitarō and bridging human-yōkai understanding. She becomes central to Nanashi's vessel plan, ultimately redeeming its malice by naming it. Her accidental killing of Neko-Musume plunges her into despair until truths surface. In the finale, she sacrifices all memories of yōkai friends to resurrect Kitarō, partially recalling them years later during a reunion where she plans a gathering at the yōkai bathhouse.

Trivia notes her resemblance to Yumeko Tendō (1985 anime) and her name meaning "true name," chosen by her great-grandmother—a professional worshipper. Her surname combines "dog" and "mountain." Her appearance or role in films, OVAs, or spin-offs remains undocumented.
