Description
Eren Yeager is the central protagonist of the first part of the series, born in the year 835 in the Shiganshina District, which is located at the southern end of Wall Maria. His parents are Grisha Yeager, a doctor, and Carla Yeager. At a young age, he developed a close bond with two childhood friends, Mikasa Ackerman, whom he saved from human traffickers and brought into his family, and Armin Arlert, whose dream of seeing the outside world deeply influenced Eren.
Possessing a strong and unyielding will, Eren is characterized by his impulsive and passionate nature, often acting on his emotions rather than冷静な reasoning. His defining trait is a fierce, almost obsessive, drive for freedom, which leads him to view the walls confining humanity as nothing more than a cage. This desire is fueled by an intense hatred for the Titans, a feeling born from powerlessness after witnessing his mother being devoured by a Titan during the breach of Wall Maria when he was ten years old. This traumatic event crystallizes his primary motivation: to eradicate every last Titan and reclaim the world for what remains of humanity.
In this part of the story, Eren’s role is that of a determined soldier who enlists in the 104th Training Corps alongside his friends, graduating fifth in his class. He is assigned to the Survey Corps, the military branch dedicated to venturing outside the walls and engaging Titans directly. Early in his service during the Battle of Trost, he appears to be killed while saving Armin, but is revealed to possess the power to transform into a fifteen-meter-tall Titan, making him a unique asset and a heavily guarded member of Captain Levi’s Special Operations Squad. His most significant relationships during this period are with Armin, whose strategic mind he trusts implicitly, and Mikasa, whose protective nature he finds both frustrating and reassuring.
His character development in this initial arc revolves around learning to accept and control his newfound, monstrous abilities while grappling with the weight of being humanity’s hope. He struggles with his own rage and feelings of inadequacy, recognizing that his initial belief in his own strength was a sign of weakness, and he works to become a more reliable soldier under the guidance of his superiors like Levi. His notable abilities include transforming into the Attack Titan, which grants him immense strength, endurance, and regenerative capabilities. During an encounter with the Female Titan, he demonstrates a growing tactical awareness in combat, despite being outmatched. Later, he unconsciously awakens a power known as the "Coordinate," which allows him to command other Titans, a revelation that becomes a pivotal element of his journey.
