Description
Born in Marley's Liberio internment zone around 843, Bertholdt Hoover was an Eldian who became a Warrior candidate in the Marleyan military. He demonstrated exceptional marksmanship during training. Witnessing Porco Galliard bully Reiner Braun, Bertholdt intervened, forging a lifelong friendship with Reiner. He inherited the Colossal Titan power young and mastered its abilities swiftly. Alongside Reiner Braun, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard, Bertholdt infiltrated Paradis Island in 845 on a mission to retrieve the Founding Titan for Marley. Approaching Wall Maria to breach it, the group encountered a mindless Titan later revealed as Ymir; Marcel sacrificed himself to save Reiner, while Bertholdt reportedly fled in terror.

Standing approximately 192 centimeters tall, Bertholdt was the tallest known member of the 104th Training Corps. He had short dark hair, thin eyebrows, an elongated face, and was frequently noticed for nervous sweating. His Colossal Titan form reached roughly 60 meters in height, characterized by exposed musculature, disproportionately long arms, pillar-like legs, and constant emission of high-temperature steam. This form lacked skin entirely, with jets of steam paralleling his human tendency to sweat nervously.

Personally, Bertholdt presented as quiet, reserved, and openly called himself a coward with low self-esteem. His military instructor, Keith Shadis, noted significant potential in him but observed a lack of initiative and confidence, often following others rather than taking charge. He maintained a background presence unless compelled to act, particularly when Reiner or Annie faced threats. Despite his role in devastating attacks, Bertholdt displayed internal conflict and guilt. He exhibited visible panic and tears alongside Reiner and Annie during Marco Bott's death. He later referred to his 104th comrades as "cherished friends" or "precious comrades," indicating lingering empathy. He rationalized their inevitable conflict as a consequence of the world's inherent cruelty rather than personal fault.

His loyalty centered intensely on Reiner and Annie. He acted decisively when their safety was endangered, brandishing a blade against Armin Arlert over concerns about Annie's torture and declaring humanity within the Walls "children of the devil." This protective instinct occasionally overrode his typical passivity. However, he often remained inactive during critical moments, including Reiner's dissociative episodes or the revelation of their identities as Titans. This perceived unreliability led Reiner to assign tasks to Annie instead during pivotal events like Marco's gear confiscation.

A significant shift occurred during the Battle of Shiganshina. Confronted by former comrades, Bertholdt adopted a detached, resolute demeanor. He rejected Armin's psychological manipulation regarding Annie, stating the world's cruelty made their actions inevitable. He calmly accepted his role as a villain, expressing indifference toward killing his former friends and humanity within the Walls. This transformation showcased previously suppressed assertiveness and determination, noted by Reiner and Zeke as unusual and new. He declared he would bear the burden of necessary actions to prevent further suffering among his closest allies.

Despite this newfound resolve, Bertholdt's fear of personal death resurfaced when defeated. After his Colossal Titan form was overpowered and he was extracted, he reverted to human form and faced Armin's newly transformed Pure Titan. In his final moments, he abandoned his earlier composure, frantically begging his former comrades for help and screaming for Reiner and Annie before being consumed alive.

Bertholdt's death transferred the Colossal Titan's power to Armin Arlert. His character arc concluded with unresolved tensions between his inherent passivity, capacity for empathy, and the brutal demands of his mission, encapsulated in his belief that outcomes were acceptable in a fundamentally cruel world.
