Description
Rescued as an infant near Hong Kong by Wilhelmina Carmel and the Crimson Lord Merihim (disguised as "Shiro"), Shana was raised and trained within the flying fortress Tendōkyū. An attack by Bal Masqué forced her into a Flame Haze contract with the Crimson Lord Alastor, the "Flame of Heaven," to defend the stronghold. This event marked her succession as the "Enpatsu Shakugan no Uchite" (Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter), replacing Mathilde Saint-Omer. Following Tendōkyū's destruction, she parted ways with Wilhelmina. Her solitary journey led to a partnership with veteran Flame Haze Sophie Sawallisch in Eastern Europe before her travels brought her to Japan.

Her Flame Haze contract halts aging, giving Shana the physical appearance of a girl aged 9–13 years. She stands 141 cm tall with jet-black hair that ignites into fiery crimson during combat. Her dark brown eyes glow red when using powers, set against a fair complexion and featuring a distinctive ahoge. Initially, she wore a black jumpsuit and trench-coat-style Yogasa (Treasure Tool cape). After settling in Misaki City, she adopted the local high school uniform, later favoring a sleeveless black bodysuit with the Yogasa in Xanadu – though she reverted to the uniform for significant events. Other attire included a pink cheongsam from her pre-contract life, swimwear, a green dress at the Sakai residence, and formal, battle-damaged dresses during conflicts.

Shana's personality evolved from cold pragmatism toward human empathy. Initially viewing her duty to preserve the balance between the Crimson Realm and Earth as paramount, she dismissed humans as expendable, rejecting even a name and referring to Mystes Yuji Sakai as an "it." Key shifts occurred when Yuji sacrificed his existence to repair battle damage and aided her against the Denizen Friagne, nearly vanishing. This contradicted her worldview, leading her to accept him as a person, adopt the name "Shana" (from her sword, Nietono no Shana), and develop romantic feelings. Her emotional growth involved overcoming jealousy toward Kazumi Yoshida and Fumina Konoe, learning social nuances like the significance of kisses from Chigusa Sakai, and forming friendships. She retained a fierce temper, often exclaiming "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!" when flustered, and a "transcendent sweet tooth," particularly for melon bread.

Her combat abilities derive from her contract with Alastor. She wields the nodachi Nietono no Shana and employs Unrestricted Spells: Purifying Flame for cleansing, Fuzetsu (time-stop Seals), Wings of Crimson (flame wings for flight), and Blade of Crimson (flame-coated sword strikes). Her signature technique, Heaven-and-Earth Sun'dering, summons Alastor's true form at immense personal risk; she is the first Flame Haze to survive it due to her high Power of Existence capacity. Initially reliant on brute force, she evolved into a strategic fighter, often aided by Yuji's tactics. Post-series, she gained independent flight capability.

Relationships defined her development. Alastor acted as a stern parental figure, while Wilhelmina served as her mentor and guardian, albeit neglecting her social education. Yuji became her emotional anchor, their bond deepening into mutual love despite conflicts, such as his merger with the Snake of the Festival – an event that traumatized her when he stripped her powers. She resolved to confront him, reconciling duty with personal desire. Her rivalry with Kazumi Yoshida softened into friendship. She respected Chigusa Sakai as a maternal advisor, and fellow Flame Hazes like Margery Daw transitioned from adversaries to allies.

Her journey culminated in opposing the Snake of the Festival's plan to create Xanadu, fearing its collapse would destabilize both worlds. After Yuji was restored to humanity via the Grammatica spell and reclaimed his existence, he invited Shana to join him in Xanadu. She accepted, symbolizing her balance between duty and personal fulfillment. There, she continued battling rogue Denizens while maintaining her connection to Yuji and her past, exemplified by her enduring preference for the Misaki High uniform as "lucky clothes."
