Description
August Samuel Wahlen is a high-ranking admiral within the Galactic Empire's fleet, serving as one of the key military commanders under Kaiser Reinhard von Lohengramm. Born in 767 UC (Universal Calendar), he is a professional officer who rose through the ranks after an early career that saw him attain the rank of lieutenant commander by 792 UC. In that year, he served as the first officer on the cruiser Hässliche Entlein, where he first encountered Reinhard von Müsel, who would later become Kaiser Reinhard. During this posting, Wahlen assisted Reinhard in a secret mission to recover a stolen prototype of a directional Seffle particle generator from a defecting noble, an operation that demonstrated his early reliability and competence.

In terms of personality, Wahlen is characterized by a steady, loyal, and dependable nature. He is not depicted as a flamboyant or overly ambitious commander but rather as a solid, conscientious officer who executes his duties with unwavering dedication. He maintains a calm and professional demeanor even under extreme pressure, a trait that earns him the respect of both his superiors and his subordinates. His leadership style is grounded and practical, focused on achieving objectives with minimal unnecessary risk. He is known to be a man of few words, yet his actions consistently demonstrate a deep sense of duty and personal honor. While primarily defined by his military professionalism, he is not without a personal side, as he is one of the few admirals known to have a family; he was married at the age of twenty-seven, and though his wife died in childbirth, he has a son who is cared for by his parents while Wahlen is away on campaign.

Wahlen's primary motivation is his loyalty to Reinhard von Lohengramm and the ideal of a unified, well-governed empire. He is not driven by personal glory or political ambition but by a sense of responsibility to serve his sovereign and the state effectively. His actions are consistently guided by a desire to fulfill his assigned missions and support the overall strategic goals of the Lohengramm dynasty. This sense of duty is so profound that he continues to lead from the front even after suffering a grievous injury, seeing his service not as a path to prestige but as an obligation to be honored.

His role in the story is that of a reliable and versatile fleet commander. He is one of the original admirals selected to serve under Reinhard when the latter established his admiralty in 796 UC. His first major combat success came at the Battle of Amlitzer (also known as Amritsar), where he ambushed and effectively destroyed the Free Planets Alliance's Eighth Fleet, announcing his arrival as a formidable tactician. He subsequently played a significant role in the suppression of the Lippstadt Rebellion, fighting alongside Siegfried Kircheis and Cornelius Lutz at the Battle of Kifeuser (or Kyffhäuser). He also participated in the pivotal Battle of Vermilion against the Alliance. Wahlen's most personally defining mission came when Kaiser Reinhard tasked him with leading the assault on Earth to subjugate the Terraist Church. During this operation, he was stabbed in the left arm by a Terraist fanatic with a poisoned knife. To save his life, he was placed in a coma and his arm was amputated. Following his recovery, he was fitted with a prosthetic limb and continued to serve, commanding his fleet from the battleship Salamander. He later fought at the Second Battle of Rantemario, where a direct hit from Oskar von Reuenthal's fleet destroyed his prosthetic arm, yet he continued to command his forces without panic.

Wahlen's key relationships are primarily professional. His most significant bond is his loyalty to Reinhard, whom he serves without question. He shares a strong working relationship with fellow admirals, particularly Cornelius Lutz, with whom he often fought alongside in the early campaigns under Siegfried Kircheis. He is also noted to have a complex and largely private association with the manipulative Minister of Military Affairs, Oskar von Reuenthal, though the full nature of this relationship is known to few. After the assault on Earth, he also had a notable encounter with Julian Mintz and his companions, facilitating their travel to the imperial capital of Odin, though at the time he was unaware of Mintz's true identity as an officer of the revolutionary Iserlohn Republic.

Throughout the narrative, Wahlen shows a subtle but clear development. He begins as a promising young officer and proves himself as a capable fleet commander in major battles. His character arc is marked by the physical and psychological cost of his service. The loss of his arm is a turning point, transforming him from an able-bodied warrior into a visibly scarred veteran. However, rather than retiring, he adapts to his new reality, demonstrating resilience and an unyielding will to continue his duty. He is later noted as one of the admirals recommended by Kaiser Reinhard for promotion to the rank of fleet admiral before Reinhard's death, signifying his ultimate value and trustworthiness as a pillar of the empire.

Regarding notable abilities, Wahlen is considered a master of steady and methodical tactics. He is not known for brilliant, unconventional strategies but rather for his exceptional ability to execute given orders with precision and to hold his ground against fierce opposition. He is a solid and reliable battlefield commander who can be trusted to anchor a battle line or carry out a difficult assignment without faltering. His personal courage is also a significant ability; he maintains composure and command even after losing a limb in combat, and he is physically robust enough to engage in confrontations with other aggressive officers to maintain order. Kaiser Reinhard himself held Wahlen in high regard, valuing his ability to reliably accomplish any task assigned to him, even if he lacked the flashy brilliance of some of his peers.
