Description
Ludwig Herzog von Mohn Nahe Liechtenstein, often called Lui by those close to him though most refer to him by his full name out of fear or respect, is a central figure in Ginyuu Mokushiroku Meine Liebe wieder. He holds the noble title of Herzog, which corresponds to Duke, making him the second-highest ranking noble among the Strahl candidates at Rosenstolz Academy. He is seventeen years old, stands 185 centimeters tall, and is left-handed. His family background is deeply intertwined with the royal house of Kuchen: his mother is the sister of the king, making the monarch his uncle, while his father is also a duke. He has a younger sister and a younger brother, and his uncle on his father's side is the father of Camus, making Ludwig and Camus cousins.
In terms of personality, Ludwig is frequently described as cold-hearted, arrogant, and calculating. He is acutely aware of the expectations that come with his rank and position in society and meets them with a detached indifference that can unsettle those around him. He often speaks bluntly, leaving his companions shocked at his candid observations. Despite this exterior, Ludwig is a sharp judge of character and possesses an intuitive understanding of what others need to hear in order to resolve their own problems. He appreciates challenges that are fair to both sides. He claims to be fundamentally different from his rival Orpherus, suggesting that he lacks Orpherus's ability to seize opportunities and fight for them, a self-assessment that another character warns is dangerously self-defeating.
Ludwig's motivations are rooted in his sense of duty and his acceptance of his predetermined role in the aristocratic world. He does not strive for personal ambition in the way some of his peers do, but rather fulfills what is expected of him with cool precision. As a member of the Strahl class, he is training to become a candidate for the king's advisory council, a path that carries significant political weight in the fictional country of Kuchen. In the second series, his central role in the story is defined by a crisis: he is accused of severe treason, and the narrative arc revolves around him and the other Strahl candidates proving his innocence while uncovering a larger plot to sell Kuchen to foreign interests. His mother's depression is also noted as a source of personal turmoil during this period.
Within the group of five main noblemen, Ludwig occupies a unique position. He is both an ally and a rival to Orpherus, and his relationship with Camus is that of cousins. He interacts with Eduard, Naoji, and the visiting English writer Isaac, and his sharp words often provoke or guide those around him. His development over the course of the series involves confronting the limitations of his detached worldview, as the accusations against him force him into a situation where he must rely on others and face the consequences of his own cold calculations. His notable abilities include strategic thinking, keen political insight, and a commanding presence that earns him both fear and reverence from his peers and subordinates. He is a member of the Science Club at the academy, enjoys reading, and notably dislikes a certain rival, a reference to his complex dynamic with Orpherus.
