Description
Gamba begins as a brown mouse living in the city, scrambling to secure food through physical clashes with fellow rodents. His name stems from "Ganbariya" ("Battler" or "Eager Beaver"), mirroring his persistent and tenacious spirit. Early events forge his energetic personality, intense curiosity, and budding sense of justice.

After encountering the injured mouse Chūta, who fled persecution by the white weasel Noroi on Dreamer Island (Yumemishima), Gamba pledges to lead a rescue mission. This signifies a crucial shift from self-interest to leadership for a collective cause. He recruits seasoned sailors: the one-eyed Yoisho, the intellectual Gakusha, the poetic medic Shijin, and the swift runner Ikasama. His childhood friend Bōbo (replaced by Mampuku in the 2015 version) joins the expedition, offering loyal support despite his gluttonous and easygoing nature.

Journeying to confront Noroi's tyranny, Gamba employs strategic thinking in multiple conflicts. He coordinates defenses against Noroi's forces, including a decisive battle where cultural knowledge preserved by the island mice becomes key to defeating the oppressor. These events cement his reputation as an inspirational leader motivating others through unwavering courage and moral conviction.

Following the Noroi conflict, Gamba pursues further adventures against new threats. When Shijin's otter companion Nagisa vanishes, he leads a group to South Island, encountering endangered otters persecuted by the wild dog Black. This 1991 narrative underscores Gamba's commitment to protecting vulnerable communities, extending his protective instincts beyond mice to other species facing extinction. During this mission, he confronts the apathetic bird Kimagure, challenging her indifference to suffering and ultimately compelling her to act against oppression.

Later years find Gamba separated from his companions, reflecting the personal toll of continuous adventuring. The 2015 adaptation reintroduces him leading mice against new adversaries, including a wild dog leader perpetuating cycles of violence rooted in human-inflicted trauma. This narrative maintains Gamba's core traits of resilience and protective leadership while adjusting character dynamics, such as Mampuku assuming Bōbo's original role. His moral philosophy consistently centers on confronting injustice directly, defending the vulnerable, and accepting responsibility for communal protection regardless of personal risk.
