Description
Boobo is a central character in the 1975 anime series Ganba no Bōken, known in English as The Adventure of Gamba and Otters. He is portrayed as a town mouse and the closest friend and childhood companion of the protagonist, Gamba. Boobo is visually distinguished by his green fur, a unique trait among the main cast. His personality is defined by a combination of gluttony, an easygoing demeanor, and an absentminded nature, which is also the origin of his name.
Boobo’s primary motivation at the beginning of the story is simple: a desire to see the sea and to leave their town due to hunger and local threats. This prompts him to join Gamba on their initial voyage. However, his motivations evolve when the pair encounter an injured island mouse named Chuta. Upon learning of the tyranny of the white weasel Noroi on Yumemishima Island, Boobo commits to helping Gamba and Chuta in their fight against the oppressor. Despite his laid-back and food-focused personality, his actions demonstrate deep loyalty to his friend.
In the narrative, Boobo serves as Gamba’s steadfast companion throughout the journey to the sea and later to Yumemishima. He supports the effort to recruit other mice at the harbor and is part of the group that sails to confront the Noroi Clan. His most significant relationship is with Gamba, as his best friend and constant ally. He also develops a key relationship with Chuta, whom he agrees to help defend. In the 2015 computer-animated film adaptation Gamba: Gamba to Nakamata-tachi, Boobo's role is significantly reduced to a secondary character, with many of his original functions as Gamba’s primary companion being transferred to a new character named Manpuku. Boobo possesses a notably sensitive nose, which is practically used to locate food during the group’s travels.
