Description
Erwin Smith rose as the 13th Commander of the Survey Corps in 845, replacing Keith Shadis after Shadis resigned amidst crushing losses and personal guilt. This transition uniquely marked the first time a former commander survived the transfer.

Born October 14 to a history teacher, young Erwin exhibited fierce curiosity about contradictions in the Walls' official history. He and his father speculated the monarchy erased pre-Wall records and manipulated memories. When Erwin carelessly repeated this theory to classmates, government agents staged his father’s death as an accident, forging Erwin’s lifelong obsession with the truth.

Standing 188 cm tall with a muscular frame, Erwin had neatly parted blonde hair, piercing ice-blue eyes, and prominent eyebrows that inspired his childhood moniker "Eyebrow." He wore the Survey Corps’ green-caped uniform and commander’s emerald bolo tie. During combat against the Armored Titan, he lost his right arm below the shoulder, compromising his salute.

Erwin blended strategic genius with deep internal turmoil. Publicly, his stoic resolve and galvanizing speeches—emphasizing sacrifice for humanity’s future—earned fierce loyalty. He devised life-saving tactics like the Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation. Privately, he wrestled with guilt over sacrificing soldiers primarily to vindicate his father’s theories, confessing his ambition often eclipsed humanitarian motives. This duality drew skepticism from allies like Dot Pixis and Darius Zackly.

Key relationships defined his command. He forcibly recruited Underground assassin Levi Ackermann, transforming their hostile start into unwavering mutual trust; Levi became his deadliest operative. His complex friendship with Military Police Commander Nile Dok fractured over clashing ideals and rivalry for Marie’s affection—Erwin stepped aside, fearing his perilous duties endangered her.

His leadership fused ruthless pragmatism with empowerment. He delegated critical roles based on skill, appointing Hange Zoë to Titan research and designating them successor foreseeing his death. His raw speeches—like the iconic "My soldiers, rage!" during the suicide charge against the Beast Titan—propelled troops toward certain doom for tactical advantage. He refused to downplay mortality risks in recruitment.

Major operations under his command included capturing the Female Titan using Eren Yeager as bait, exposing human spies infiltrating the Walls, and masterminding Eren’s rescue from Reiner and Bertholdt, costing his arm. His final act unfolded at Shiganshina during Wall Maria’s recapture. To counter Zeke Yeager’s Beast Titan, he led a diversionary cavalry charge, enabling Levi’s assault. A hurled boulder mortally wounded him; hallucinating his father and the unresolved basement mystery, he perished after Levi chose to revive Armin Arlert with Titan serum over him. Command passed to Hange.
