Musashi's Sonansu, known as Jessie's Wobbuffet in English-language media, is a Psychic-type Pokémon originally owned by trainer Benny. At a Pokémon swap meet, Benny planned to trade it for a stronger Pokémon. A Team Rocket scheme involving a fake trading machine went awry when Jessie accidentally traded her Lickitung for Benny's Wobbuffet after her Poké Ball landed on a functional machine, making Wobbuffet hers. Wobbuffet displays a vacuous, air-headed personality, often popping out of its Poké Ball unprompted. While this habit initially annoyed Jessie, she and Meowth eventually accepted it. The Pokémon frequently joins Team Rocket's motto recitals, punctuating lines with its species name—a Japanese pun meaning "That's the way it is!" Despite its dopey nature, Wobbuffet proves fiercely loyal to Jessie and the trio, sometimes showing unexpected cleverness by ignoring Jessie's commands if it spots a better battle tactic. In combat, Wobbuffet relies solely on defensive moves like Counter and Mirror Coat, reflecting its species' inability to initiate attacks. These moves can challenge opponents, though Jessie's tactics sometimes hinder its effectiveness. Beyond battle, it provides comic relief, acts as a cheerleader, or serves as a strategic shield. Unlike most Team Rocket Pokémon, it often travels outside its Poké Ball with the trio. During the Sinnoh journey, spacetime distortions caused by Dialga and Palkia temporarily devolved Wobbuffet into Wynaut. After the crisis resolved and an alternate universe's Team Rocket was defeated, Arceus restored spacetime, allowing Wobbuffet to regain its evolved form. Emotional depth emerged when Wobbuffet developed affection for a Kirlia, briefly considering betrayal to protect it from capture. Later, it bonded with Dr. White's Wobbuffet, choosing to stay with her after she rescued Jessie and Wobbuffet from drowning. However, Wobbuffet ultimately abandoned its mate to rejoin Jessie during a confrontation with a Pokémon hunter. It used Counter to deflect a Rhyperior's Rock Wrecker, shielding Jessie and her companions. In the Unova arc, Jessie left Wobbuffet at Team Rocket headquarters with her Seviper and Yanmega. It later reappeared unexpectedly when the trio lamented having no Pokémon for a mission. Jessie reclaimed it, and Wobbuffet resumed active duty in Kalos, showing increased battle competence against stronger opponents. During the Alola League's Top 16 round, Wobbuffet faced James's Mareanie in a staged match meant to ensure Jessie's advancement. The plan failed when Mareanie fought seriously, overpowering Wobbuffet's defenses to secure James's win. Wobbuffet's behavioral quirks include mimicking human activities like baking Poké Puffs during Pokémon Showcases, driving vehicles, and wearing disguises with Team Rocket. It also shows occasional anxiety, notably recalling itself into its Poké Ball when intimidated by obsessive admirers.
