Kakisuke, a talking monkey rooted in Japanese folklore, serves as one of Momotarō’s animal companions. His history is marred by an impulsive act of violence: hurling unripe fruit that shattered a crab’s shell, causing her death. This deed sparked a lawsuit from the crab’s kin, who charged him with fatal harm. The incident haunts him ceaselessly, and any reference to it provokes overwhelming guilt and despair.

Following Momotarō’s downfall, Kakisuke was conscripted into the Animal Cruelty Hell sector of the Japanese underworld, joining Shiro the dog and Rurio the pheasant. Tasked with tormenting humans who harmed animals in life, he embodies the narrative’s focus on karmic retribution. During work, he adopts a merciless, aggressive persona, starkly opposing his off-duty self—a withdrawn figure burdened by unresolved regret.

His infernal employment functions as both atonement and reformation, yet the shadow of his past persists, anchoring his identity. Stationed permanently as a torturer in Animal Hell, he enforces justice with mechanical precision, his internal turmoil undiminished by time or duty.
