Description
Hercule Barton, also frequently called by the nickname Elly, is a central character in the anime Futari wa Milky Holmes. She is a sixteen-year-old student at the Holmes Detective Academy and a member of the renowned detective team Milky Holmes. Her name is an homage to the famous fictional detective Hercule Poirot. Of the four girls on her team, Hercule is distinguished by her extreme shyness and a gentle, easily embarrassed nature.
Her personality is defined by her profound timidity, which often leaves her as the most passive member of the group. Hercule struggles to speak up in conversations and is frequently ignored, even when she attempts to act as the voice of reason. She is so sensitive to attention that she cannot stand people looking at her, even for a short period of time. To combat this, she takes on a job as a posing model for an art class, a brave effort that nonetheless gives her nightmares about being stared at by the artists. Despite her bashfulness, she possesses a surprisingly high level of awareness regarding suggestive topics, often reacting strongly to inappropriate jokes or requests from her teammates.
Hercule’s primary motivation is to be a helpful and reliable detective, despite her quiet nature. She holds a deep admiration for her teammates and often looks to them for guidance. Her role in the story is that of the gentle, soft-spoken core of Milky Holmes, providing a grounding presence amidst the group's chaos. Her most notable ability is a supernatural power known as a Toy, which grants her superhuman strength. This power allows her to perform incredible physical feats, such as swinging a construction excavator like a baseball bat, lifting and throwing a whale from the seashore, and shattering large boulders with a single strike. Her strength is immense, enabling her to lift objects in the range of one to one hundred tons. Even after the team loses their Toys, Hercule shows a unique resilience by being the only one able to briefly reactivate her power during a moment of crisis.
Regarding her key relationships, Hercule is very close with her fellow Milky Holmes members: the optimistic leader Sherlock Shellingford, the tomboyish Nero Yuzurizaki, and the aloof Cordelia Glauca. She shares a particularly strong bond of admiration with two older girls named Mary and Kate, whom she calls Onee-sama after they rescue her. Hercule may also have a crush on her teammate Nero Yuzurizaki, who openly shows her affection for Hercule in return. Over the course of the narrative in Futari wa Milky Holmes, Hercule remains fundamentally shy, but she experiences development by demonstrating occasional bursts of quiet determination. Her actions often speak louder than her words, and she continues to challenge her anxieties, proving that courage is not the absence of fear, but the will to act in spite of it.
