Description
Captain Harlock is a freedom fighter and space pirate commanding the starship Arcadia. He resists oppressive regimes across various timelines, with origins depicted differently in separate continuities; in "Arcadia of My Youth," he emerges from Earth's defeat against the Illumidas. He embodies individualism and rebellion against totalitarianism, declaring he fights "for no one's sake... only for something deep in [his] heart."

His physical appearance includes an eyepatch and a distinctive long black coat, with clothing occasionally featuring the number 42—a cultural symbol associated with death in Japan. He descends from the Germanic Harlock clan of pirate-knights.

In "Space Symphony Maetel," Harlock allies with Maetel during her conflict against Queen Promethium on La Metal. He provides tactical support for the planet's rebellion, advises Maetel to include the youth Nazca in their efforts recognizing his potential role opposing mechanization, and contributes directly to Promethium's initial defeat, though her consciousness persists to threaten the galaxy again.

Harlock shares a relationship of mutual respect with Maetel, acknowledging her resolve and opposing mechanized empires, though their collaborations remain situational. His broader connections include kinship with Maetel's sister Emeraldas and a foundational partnership with the engineer Tochiro Oyama, co-creator of the Arcadia.

His philosophy rejects immortality through mechanization, viewing it as a corruption of human essence. This stance aligns him with narratives like "Galaxy Express 999," where he aids protagonists combating machine empires. The Arcadia serves as both his vessel and symbol of defiance, appearing in distinct designs across media—notably blue in early iterations and green from "Arcadia of My Youth" onward.

Harlock's influence extends beyond his immediate narrative. He appears in other Leiji Matsumoto works like "Gun Frontier" in an alternate Wild West setting and "Cosmo Warrior Zero" as a target for protagonist Warrius Zero. His legacy includes inspiring characters such as "Last Exile’s" Alex Row and recognition as a cultural icon on Japanese "Anime Heroes" postage stamps.
