Description
Hajime Saito served as a non-commissioned officer in the United Nations Cosmo Marines. He maintained a close friendship with Colonel Goro Kiryu and his family, with Kiryu's daughter Mikage viewing him as an older brother figure, defining much of his personal life during service. Saito became renowned for his hand-to-hand combat proficiency within the Marines and bore a distinctive star-shaped scar on the left side of his face from an unspecified career injury.
Stationed with the 7th Regiment at a lunar base in early 2199, Saito survived its destruction during a Garmillas attack when United Nations Cosmo Navy support failed to arrive. The attack killed Colonel Kiryu and many comrades, leaving Saito the highest-ranking survivor. His evacuation led to a fateful confrontation with Admiral Ryu Hijikata aboard the Kirishima, revealing the launch of an interstellar ship to save Earth.
By December 2199, Saito transferred to riot control in an underground city within Earth's Far-East District. Distressed by firing upon civilians suffering under deteriorating conditions, he directly confronted United Nations Cosmo Force leadership, including Chief Executive Heikuro Todo and Admiral Hijikata. Hijikata assured him of impending improvements just before news arrived of the interstellar ship's return.
By 2202, Saito commanded the UNCM 5th Regiment stationed on the Eleventh Planet in the outer solar system. Gatlantis Empire forces ambushed his position during a Christmas celebration. Facing communication blackouts and blockades, he ordered the regiment to gather survivors for evacuation and directed Master Sergeant Shiori Nagakura to breach the blockade and seek help, leading to the survivors' rescue by the Yamato.
Saito's personality combined fierce loyalty to the Cosmo Marines and their values with a willingness to bypass protocol when confronting perceived negligence or disrespect. His straightforward demeanor earned him Hijikata's quiet respect, while with Mikage Kiryu, he displayed a playful, protective side.
His legacy continued posthumously in 2205, where records identified him as the former captain of the 65th Special Task Force's Space Cavalry. Shiori Nagakura succeeded him following his death during the Gatlantis conflict.
