The First Pillar, also known as Amaterasu or Hitohashira-me, survived the Great Cataclysm and possesses an Adolla Burst. Discovered shortly after the catastrophe by Yona, who sought her power to restart civilization, she was delivered in disguise to Raffles Smith's group. Encased within a container, she became integrated into the Eternity-Style Thermal Power Generation facility "Amaterasu." This facility powers the entire Tokyo Empire, using her as a perpetual energy source against her will. Her centuries-long imprisonment and suffering were largely forgotten or ignored by a society viewing the generator as benevolent technology. She appears as a slender, nude woman with shoulder-length blonde hair and blue eyes (sometimes depicted with red eyes). Her striking resemblance to Iris, a nun from the Holy Sol Temple, later proves significant to both characters' origins. Her personality embodies intense hatred and manipulation, representing the negative human emotion of "Madness" among the Eight Pillars. This volatility stems from centuries of exploitation and isolation. Demonstrating profound misanthropy, she attempts to provoke destructive actions. She exploits Shinra Kusakabe's unresolved trauma—his resentment over being labeled a "Devil," his anger about his family's destruction, and confusion over an Infernal's identity—to control him via the Adolla Link. During this possession, she urges him to kill allies like Captain Sōichirō Hague and Arthur Boyle, promising information about his mother in exchange for violence. She derides heroism as futile, asserting that embracing violence simplifies existence compared to enduring loss. As the First Pillar, her primary ability is the Adolla Burst, enabling connections with other Pillars through the Adolla Link. This allows her to manifest spectrally before other Adolla Burst users like Shinra and Inca Kasugatani to taunt or manipulate them. Though her combat abilities remain unseen, her raw power indefinitely sustains Tokyo's infrastructure. Haumea later absorbs this power within Adolla, dubbing it the "Light of Madness" and unleashing city-scale explosions comparable to nuclear blasts. Escaping such devastation requires abilities like Shō Kusakabe's Severed Universe. Her spectral appearances drive key plot points: she contacts Shinra in dreams before his Netherworld journey, confusing him with her resemblance to Iris; she seizes control of Shinra during confrontations with Company 4, urging him to murder Hague until Arthur Boyle helps Shinra break free by appealing to his heroic ideals; she informs Shinra of the Fifth Pillar's awakening and taunts Inca about imminent danger; investigations into identical generators in the Chinese Peninsula and Tokyo confirm her forced sacrifice, exposing the empire's hypocrisy. Shinra witnesses her weeping in a dream, surrounded by flame, but she responds only with a deranged smile. Haijima Industries' leader, Gureo Haijima, acknowledges her suffering as a "necessary evil," fueling Vulcan Joseph's resolve to develop ethical energy alternatives. Her connection to Iris is revealed: Iris is her doppelgänger, created by the Evangelist. As Adolla's influence grows, Iris experiences discomfort and recognizes herself as a copy. Shinra deduces this link after noting their identical appearances and contrasting personalities—Iris embodies the compassion and purity falsely attributed to the Amaterasu machine by Tokyo's propaganda. Her final narrative role occurs when Haumea absorbs her power within Adolla, utilizing the "Light of Madness" to advance the White Clad's goals. This act culminates in Haumea's near-divine ascension during the Great Cataclysm's resurgence.
