TV-Series
Description
Orphaned as a baby under unknown circumstances in the Trump Kingdom, Makoto Kenzaki served as a royal guard dedicated to protecting Princess Marie Ange. She also performed as an idol for kingdom audiences, including the princess. When the Jikochuu invaded and destroyed the kingdom, Makoto escaped to Earth with the princess, but they became separated during the journey. This event burdened her with deep regret and a sense of failure over her inability to defend her homeland.
Adopting the civilian identity Kenzaki Makoto in Japan (a name meaning "sword" [剣] and "small peninsula" [崎], though its authenticity remains unclear), she pursues a career as a popular idol to locate the missing princess, using public performances to broadcast her presence. Starting as a street pianist, she rises to stardom with hit songs like "SONGBIRD," television appearances, and a debut single selling over one million copies in its first week. Her everyday attire typically includes a white work shirt, black tie, long indigo vest, khaki shorts, black socks, and white boots, sometimes accessorized with red glasses or a painter's cap. Performance outfits feature a strapless pink dress with black ruffles, thigh-high boots with heart designs, and a heart-shaped hair clip.
Makoto combines a strong sense of justice with a self-sacrificing streak, often facing threats alone to prioritize others' safety. This solitary approach stems from guilt over the Trump Kingdom's fall and a desire to avoid endangering others. Outwardly rational and calm, she struggles with Earth's customs and conceals her true emotions, appearing flustered when shown kindness. Only her fairy partner, Davi (acting as her manager D.B.), understands her inner thoughts and helps her open up. She initially resists forming close relationships, particularly with teammates like Mana Aida after a rocky first encounter.
Transforming into Cure Sword using a Lovely Commune device and Cure Loveads, her appearance shifts significantly: eyes lighten, hair lengthens into a lilac ponytail with loose strands, and she dons a light purple costume featuring spade motifs, asymmetrical winged sleeves, a heart brooch, and thigh-high boots. Her attacks include "Holy Sword" ("Sparkle Flash" in English adaptations) and "Sparkle Sword," unleashing sword-shaped energy or spade projectiles. She later participates in group techniques like "Lovely Force Arrow" and "Lovely Straight Flush," the latter granting her temporary angel wings.
Makoto evolves from isolation towards collaboration. Initially rejecting alliances with Mana's group to protect them, she eventually accepts their support, recognizing teamwork's strength. Key moments include earning the Purple Royal Crystal by overcoming professional jealousy during a theater role and reconciling with Regina—initially blamed for the Trump Kingdom's destruction—after Regina saves Mana. She grows emotionally attached to Ai, the princess's reincarnated form, whom she initially resisted acknowledging as "cute." Career doubts surface when criticized for lacking professionalism, but Mana helps her regain motivation by emphasizing how her singing inspires others. Ultimately, she learns to share her burdens and embrace camaraderie.
In non-series media, she appears in the film *PreCure All Stars New Stage 2* and delivers a celebratory message in *HappinessCharge PreCure!* episode 32. Her English adaptation name is Mackenzie Mack/Glitter Spade, with minimal alterations to core traits. Additional trivia notes her as the first Pretty Cure with a canonical purple theme color and celebrity status; her surname shares kanji with Kamen Rider Blade's protagonist, reflecting shared sword and spade motifs.
