Description
Gaō Mikado is the central protagonist of the Future Card Buddyfight X: All-Star Fight series. He is a sixth-grade student at Aibo Academy. His background is profoundly shaped by his late older brother, Yota Mikado, who created a comic titled Mighty Sun Fighter. Gaō adopted this heroic persona as his own, a commitment symbolized by his signature act of inverting his coat to reveal a sun emblem. The Mikado family runs a dojo, and Gaō has been trained in Mikado-style Aiki-jujutsu by his mother, Suzumi.
Gaō embodies unwavering optimism, a powerful sense of justice, and a deep-seated belief in the power of Buddyfighting to build friendships and resolve conflicts. He is naturally driven to protect others, especially those who are bullied. However, his personality is not without complexity; he harbors a violent temper that can surface under extreme stress, leading to aggressive and reckless behavior. This darker aspect stems from a childhood trauma where his obsessive desire to win in martial arts caused him to injure an opponent, leaving him with lasting guilt and a fear of repeating his mistakes. Consequently, he consciously avoids fixating on victory, redefining Buddyfighting as a bridge for camaraderie rather than a means of domination. His unwavering trust in others and quickness to forgive can sometimes become vulnerabilities that adversaries exploit.
Gaō’s journey is fueled by his desire to live up to the Mighty Sun Fighter ideal and to protect the bonds he forms. His ultimate motivation is to use Buddyfighting as a way to save others from darkness and to forge connections, even with former enemies. He has a noted catchphrase and ritual that accompanies his transformation into his heroic identity, declaring his intent to "eclipse the darkness with flames". In X: All-Star Fight, his role is that of a seasoned and legendary fighter who reunites with past comrades and rivals at the GGG Cup, celebrating his evolution from a novice to a symbol of unity. He leads a team called Team Balle du Soleil and is also a member of the Buddy Police, an organization that combats rogue monsters.
Gaō's key relationships are central to his development. His first and most significant buddy monster is Drum Bunker Dragon, whose temporary departure for training caused Gaō to lose interest in the game. He later forms deep bonds with Dragon of the Sun, Bal Dragon, whom he mentors, and with Demon Lord Dragon Batzz, a former enemy he befriends and partners with. His initial rivalry with Tasuku Ryuenji matures into a strong friendship. He also shares a close, supportive bond with his younger sister, Hanako, who is an aspiring Buddyfighter and avid fan of his heroic persona. An early obsession with winning in martial arts led to a painful past, but his journey is marked by mended rivalries, such as with Rouga Aragami, and he eventually marries Paruko Nanana, the former Buddyfight commentator, with whom he has two children, Yuga and Haru.
Throughout the series, Gaō undergoes significant development. Haunted by remorse over his past aggression, he evolves from a luck-dependent novice into a wise warrior who prioritizes mentorship and family over solitary triumph. His first canonical loss to the opponent Ikazuchi causes him to temporarily retire, shattering his self-confidence, but he eventually finds his passion again with the help of his friends. His development is marked by the constant struggle to control his immense power and volatile temper, learning to use his abilities to protect rather than destroy, and ultimately cementing his legacy as a champion of shared strength.
Gaō possesses several notable abilities. Due to his martial arts training, he is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat. He has unique powers tied to his mysterious cat-like eyes. One such power is the ability to evolve Impact cards, transforming them into more powerful versions, though they revert to their original state if given to another fighter. His primary special ability is Future Force, which allows him to materialize Buddyfight cards into reality. Initially, this power activated involuntarily during moments of danger or rage, causing him to lose memory of the event. Later, he learns to consciously control it. He also manifests a Buddy Skill, a golden hoverboard that allows him to fly alongside his partner monsters. As the series progresses, Gaō unlocks several powerful transformations. These include the Dragon Force of Anger, triggered by his emotional anguish when Bal Dragon is poisoned; the dangerous Draconification, which transforms his body into armor at great personal risk; and the ultimate Future Force DX, which combines all of his forms into one.
