Description
Kaito Daimon is the central protagonist, a sixteen-year-old first-year high school student who transferred to Root Academy after returning from England, where he had been sent to a boarding school following the death of his parents. His early life was significantly shaped by the influential figures around him; his guardian, Baron Kaido, enrolled him in the English school, and his parents, who were officers of the mysterious organization POG, were meant to train him as a candidate for a Phi-Brain, though they grew to genuinely love him as their own son.

Kaito is defined by an extraordinary, all-consuming passion for puzzles. He is a natural-born Solver, possessing a genius-level intellect that he applies not just to logical deduction but also to an intuitive understanding of a puzzle creator's intentions and emotions. This love is so central to his identity that he is often seen as a puzzle fanatic who eats, sleeps, and breathes his craft. His signature catchphrase, declared with a distinctive playful pose, is "There is no puzzle I can't solve," a declaration of his immense self-confidence. Before solving a puzzle, he is known to announce, "Let the Puzzle Time begin".

His personality is that of a hot-blooded and magnetic hero who is initially portrayed as somewhat indifferent to social norms and a bit of a loner, though this is balanced by a strong underlying charisma that draws others to him. Despite his genius, Kaito holds a firm belief in the purity of puzzles as forms of entertainment and is genuinely offended when they are used as tools for deadly challenges or violence. This conviction is a core part of his character; he rejects the idea that puzzles should be traps or weapons. He has a few noted personal dislikes, including leeks and the homemade sweets made by his childhood friend.

Motivationally, Kaito is not driven by fame or power but by the sheer intellectual challenge a puzzle presents. However, his journey forces him to confront deeper motivations, including a powerful sense of obligation. He carries the memory of a past failure from nine years earlier, when he and a close friend named Rook were separated after he was late for an appointment, an event that has left him obsessed with keeping his word. His role in the story begins when he solves a dangerous Philosopher's Puzzle, a life-threatening game created by the organization POG. By solving it, he obtains the Orpheus armband and is given the title "Einstein". This event thrusts him into a larger world of puzzle battles involving POG and later the Orpheus Order, where he must use his abilities not just for the love of solving, but to protect his friends and confront the true purpose of these deadly games.

Key relationships are central to his development. His childhood friend Nonoha Itou is a constant companion who, while not a skilled puzzle solver herself, possesses a photographic memory and acts as his emotional anchor. His most significant relationship is with Rook Banjou Crossfield, another genius who becomes both a rival and a deep friend. Kaito's dedication to saving Rook from a dark path is a major driving force in the first season. He also develops ties with other Solvers, including the strategic Gammon Sakanoue and the technical genius Cubic Galois, forming a team of highly unique individuals who support him.

Throughout the series, Kaito experiences significant mental and emotional growth. He starts as a confident, almost cocky genius who solves puzzles in a vacuum, but he evolves into a more mature individual who understands the weight of his choices. He undergoes several Heroic Blue Screens of Death, moments of complete emotional collapse when faced with overwhelming truths or failures, only to recover with intense heroic resolve. A notable example of his willpower is his ability to reject the corrupting influence of the Orpheus armband's power on more than one occasion. In later story arcs, he is forced to make impossible choices, such as facing a puzzle designed to allow only two survivors, and ultimately confronts the sorrow of an eternal separation from a friend, an experience that leaves him profoundly changed and more aware of his own helplessness.

Kaito's notable abilities are primarily mental. He is a recognized genius puzzle solver whose talents operate on an almost supernatural level when he wears the Orpheus armband, which enhances his concentration, perception, and insight to near-superhuman speeds, though this comes with significant personal risk. He can experience a "Glowing Red Eye of Doom," indicating his mind is operating at its peak, and can enter a "Heroic Safe Mode" when the armband is fully activated. Physically, he is a teenage boy of average build, standing out primarily for his spiky red hair, which visually aligns with his passionate and hot-blooded nature.
