Alph functions as Fate Testarossa's primary familiar. Originally a diseased, dying puppy (or wolf cub in movie continuity) abandoned by her pack on Midchilda, Fate, aided by Rynith, saved her by transferring her soul into a magical body sustained by Fate's mana, forging their familiar bond. Though granted freedom, Alph chose to dedicate her existence to Fate's protection.
She possesses significant shapeshifting abilities. Her forms include a human guise for urban stealth, a humanoid wolf/dog-woman form for combat and daily tasks, and a giant lupine form for direct battle. Later, to reduce Fate's mana burden after family life begins, Alph adopts a smaller, younger-looking humanoid form and a puppy form. Her barrier jacket resembles Fate's, featuring a white top, pink short-shorts, and later upgrades adding a black cape, armored gloves, and boots.
Alph's combat blends physical prowess in humanoid or beast forms with supportive and offensive spells. Her known spells include ranged attacks (Photon Lancer), capture (Ring Bind), defense (Round Shield), and transportation (Dimensional Transfer). As Fate's familiar, she theoretically accesses all her master's spells but favors hand-to-hand combat and support magic.
During the first movie's events, Alph actively aided Fate in collecting Jewel Seeds and confronted Precia Testarossa over Fate's abuse. Severely injured and expelled by Precia, she allied with Nanoha Takamachi to rescue Fate. Alph witnessed Fate's breakdown upon learning she was Alicia Testarossa's clone and assisted in the battle against Precia at the Garden of Time, though unable to prevent its collapse.
Later media show Alph evolving her role. She took on non-combat duties like household chores and childcare for the Harlaown family, often using her puppy or younger forms to conserve Fate's mana. She mentored other familiars, such as teaching Zafira his puppy form. During *StrikerS*, she offered emotional support to Fate's adopted children, advising them to trust Fate, and assisted Yuuno Scrya with research at the Infinity Library.
Alternate continuities present variations: *INNOCENT* depicts her as the Testarossa family pet dog named Arf. *Brave Duel* uses her movie wolf-woman design. The *Portable* games feature her as a playable character in *The Gears of Destiny*, showcasing combat moves like Barrier Break Strike and Lightning Fall. Alph's character shifts from direct combat to supportive roles, prioritizing Fate's well-being and family while maintaining unwavering loyalty across all official media.
