TV-Series
Description
Alph, occasionally transliterated as Arf, serves as Fate Testarossa's familiar. Created via magical contract in 0063, she began as a fatally ill Midchildan wolf pup exiled by her pack. Fate found her and, aided by Rynith, transferred Alph's soul into a mana-sustained magical body. Though granted complete freedom, Alph devoted herself to protecting Fate through their bond.

During the original series, Alph aids Fate in gathering Jewel Seeds on Earth, clashing with Nanoha Takamachi and Yuuno Scrya. She shifts between human, dog-woman, and giant red dog forms while residing with Fate on Earth and at Presea Testarossa's Garden of Time hideout. Alph voices concerns over Presea's abuse of Fate, warnings Fate initially ignores. After confronting Presea and suffering grave injuries, Alph flees to Earth, sheltered by Arisa Bunnings. She later joins Nanoha to rescue Fate, witnessing Fate's arrest after the Garden of Time collapses.

In A's, Alph accompanies Fate on a Time-Space Administrative Bureau mission against the Wolkenritter. She adopts a puppy guise to blend into human society, charming Arisa. Partnering with Yuuno for backup, she frequently battles Zafira. When the Book of Darkness traps Fate in an illusory dream, Alph manifests as a pet in the fabricated Testarossa household. The true Alph later fights NachtWal once Fate escapes the illusion.

Between A's and StrikerS, Alph lives with the Harlaown family on Earth, addressing Lindy Harlaown maternally. She teaches Zafira to assume a puppy form. By StrikerS, Alph transitions to smaller, younger-looking human and dog-girl forms to minimize Fate's mana drain, shifting from combat to domestic duties. She manages household chores, cares for Chrono and Amy's children, and mentors Erio Mondial and Caro Ru Lushe. Flashbacks and sound stages depict her advocating for Fate during a Riot Force 6 mission and assisting Yuuno Scrya with Cradle research at the Infinity Library.

Across alternate continuities, Alph's depiction differs. The movie series alters her origin from domestic dog to wolf cub, featuring wolf-based transformations. In Reflection, she retains a youthful humanoid form matching Fate and Yuuno. Within Brave Duel, she appears as the Testarossa family pet dog, her wolf-woman design mirroring movie aesthetics.

Alph's magical abilities center on shapeshifting, primarily utilizing wolf-like giant dog, humanoid dog-woman, and human forms. She develops a specialized puppy disguise for urban stealth by A's. Her barrier jacket combines a white top, pink shorts, black cape, and combat gear echoing Fate's outfit, upgraded in A's with armored gloves and boots for melee engagements. She fights using hand-to-hand techniques, fangs, and claws, supplemented by support/shooting spells like Photon Lancer, Ring Bind, Round Shield, and Dimensional Transfer. As a familiar, she theoretically accesses all spells Fate knows. The Gears of Destiny grants her playable moves including Photon Lancer (ranged), Barrier Break Strike (charged strike), and Lightning Fall (area-of-effect).
