Description
Albator, also known as Captain Harlock, is a space pirate defined by stoic resolve and an unyielding devotion to liberty. His lineage descends from aerial explorers and warriors: Phantom F. Harlock I, who flew perilous missions over the Owen Stanley Mountains in the early 20th century, and Phantom F. Harlock II, a German Luftwaffe pilot during World War II who aided Japanese engineer Toshiro Oyama’s escape to neutral Switzerland, forging a pact of eternal friendship between bloodlines. Centuries later, in the late 2960s, Albator returns to a conquered Earth as a decorated officer in the Solar Federation. After Earth falls to the Illumidas (aided by the Tokargans) and his wife and lover, Maya, perishes in a clash that costs him his right eye, he is branded an outlaw. His striking visage bears a cross-shaped scar and an eyepatch, and his iconic black ensemble with a crimson-lined cape features the number 42. Armed with a Gravity Saber and a Cosmo Dragoon, he commands the formidable flagship Arcadia, secretly built by Tochiro Oyama, Toshiro’s descendant. In some narratives, Tochiro’s consciousness merges with the ship’s systems, rendering it sentient. Albator’s crew includes fellow pirate captain Emeraldas, who shares his rebellious ethos, and orphaned youths such as Tadashi Monono, a bounty hunter who initially seeks to claim the price on Albator’s head before evolving into a protégé. He clashes with adversaries like Mr. Zone, a human ally of the Illumidas, and in expanded tales such as Endless Odyssey, he confronts the cosmic entity Noo. Across his appearances, including the 2013 CGI film adaptation, Albator endures as a Byronic hero rejecting totalitarianism, fighting only for something deep in his heart, with his legend intersecting figures from Galaxy Express 999 and Queen Emeraldas.
