Description
Dr. Jacques von Hämsterviel is a diminutive, white-furred alien with red eyes, long rabbit-like ears, prominent buck teeth, and a bushy tail. He is a genetic scientist and a graduate of Evil Genius University, where he was once a partner and best friend to Dr. Jumba Jookiba. During their collaboration, Hämsterviel used his shady business deals to fund Jumba's creation of illegal genetic experiments. His long-term scheme was to finance the project, claim the experiments as his own property, and then betray Jumba to the authorities to take control of the universe. He did indeed inform the Galactic Federation of their illegal work, leading to Jumba's arrest, though Hämsterviel was also imprisoned as a result.

Hämsterviel possesses a classic Napoleon complex. Despite his short stature, he is extremely self-absorbed and desires nothing less than total galactic domination, viewing no one as his equal. He is cunning and diabolical, but also acts like a spoiled brat, throwing violent tantrums when he does not get his way. He is notoriously abusive to his henchman, Captain Gantu, whom he constantly berates and insults for his failures, never showing gratitude. His treatment of others is purely utilitarian; he discards minions once they outlive their usefulness, such as when he fired Gantu after creating the superior experiment, Leroy. Despite his grand, menacing persona, Hämsterviel is a coward when facing direct danger, often pleading for mercy or claiming his evil plans were jokes when he is overpowered. Early flashbacks suggest he was once more jovial and a jokester during his friendship with Jumba, contrasting sharply with his later despotism.

His primary motivation is to conquer the galaxy and become the most powerful being in the universe. He believes he owns Jumba's first 625 experiments because he financed their creation. In the Stitch! anime, his goal evolves from simply recapturing these experiments to harvesting absolute power. He specifically targets Stitch and the wish-granting Spiritual Stone on Izayoi Island, seeking to become the most powerful being in the universe.

Hämsterviel serves as the primary antagonist of the franchise, including the Stitch! anime. After his initial imprisonment, he recruits Gantu as his field operative to capture the experiments scattered on Earth. In the anime, he frequently leaves his base of operations to confront Stitch and his new human companion, Yuna, directly. His role often involves using other experiments as tools for his schemes.

His key relationships are defined by exploitation and hatred. He despises his former partner Jumba, as well as Stitch, Lilo, and Pleakley, directing many of his schemes to enslave or kill them. His relationship with his henchman Gantu is one of extreme verbal and emotional abuse, though this cruel treatment ultimately contributes to his downfall when Gantu betrays him out of spite. In the anime, he also partners with a fearsome alien named Delia, an old colleague from his past, though this alliance is equally fraught with tension, often resulting in Delia punishing him for his failures.

Throughout the franchise, Hämsterviel shows little genuine development, remaining consistently obsessed with power. However, his methods escalate from merely attempting to retrieve existing experiments to coercing Jumba into creating new, more powerful ones like Leroy. In the Stitch! anime, he adapts by developing new technologies, such as using recordings of Experiment 624 Angel to control other experiments and transmuting their DNA to enhance their abilities and revert them to evil under his command. He also creates his own original experiment named Skunkuna. His story is a recurring cycle of escape, elaborate scheming, and eventual re-imprisonment.

Notable abilities include his high intelligence as a genetic scientist, allowing him to create experiments like Skunkuna and modify the DNA of existing ones. He is also depicted as an expert laser-sword duelist. He operates from a technologically advanced prison cell or spaceship, equipped with communication and teleportation systems, which he uses to command his forces and conduct his research.
