Description
Raine Sage is a Tethe'allan half-elf who later resides in Sylvarant's Iselia village. She endured significant childhood hardship when her parents, Virginia and Kloitz Sage, abandoned her and her infant brother Genis at an Otherworldly Gate ruin to protect them from persecution by Sybak's Imperial Research Academy. A traumatic fall into the ocean during their escape left her with aquaphobia. At age eleven, she assumed responsibility for Genis, forging documents to conceal their half-elf heritage by posing as pure-blooded elves to gain acceptance in Iselia. By twenty-three, she became the village schoolteacher, instructing Lloyd Irving, Colette Brunel, and Genis.

Her personality blends pragmatism, intellectual curiosity, and emotional complexity. She serves as the party's primary healer and strategist during the Journey of Regeneration, often advocating logical solutions over emotionally driven actions. This pragmatism sometimes manifests as cynicism, contrasting with Lloyd Irving's idealism. She exhibits intense scholarly enthusiasm, particularly for ancient ruins and artifacts—an obsession later revealed as stemming from her childhood abandonment. Her attempts to locate that specific ruin represented a lifelong effort to understand her past. Despite her generally composed demeanor, she displays a quick temper, especially when her notoriously poor culinary skills (due to experimental ingredients) are criticized, and she physically disciplines Genis and Lloyd when angered.

Character development occurs through confronting her past trauma. Reaching Exire in Tethe'alla, she reunites with her mentally unstable mother Virginia, who cradles a doll as if it were Raine. Initially reacting with fury at Virginia's abandonment and amnesia, Raine later receives her mother's diary explaining the abandonment was protective. This revelation allows partial reconciliation, though residual resentment surfaces later in Welgaia where she acknowledges Virginia as "a mother who was too weak to stand against the world's hatred." Her relationship with Lloyd Irving also catalyzes growth; she evolves from skepticism about his ideals to profound belief, culminating in her willingness to sacrifice herself at the Tower of Salvation to operate machinery ensuring his survival. She declares her soul would "live on in the world Lloyd creates," demonstrating her commitment to ending racial discrimination against half-elves. Depending on affection levels, she may express romantic feelings for Lloyd, leading to them traveling together post-game.

In the sequel *Dawn of the New World*, Raine appears at age twenty-five. She and Genis travel to promote half-elf acceptance, while concurrently searching for Lloyd if romantic ties were established. She intervenes to protect Emil Castagnier and Marta Lualdi at Martel Temple and the Iselia Human Ranch, showcasing her protective instincts. Later, she accompanies them to investigate Lloyd's actions, reuniting with Genis at the Triet Ruins where her archeological fervor resurfaces. She assists in clearing Regal Bryant's false imprisonment in Izoold before temporarily parting ways with the group in Flanoir after entrusting Regal with theories about Emil's suppressed memories.

Key persistent traits include unwavering dedication to Genis, scholarly passion, aquaphobia, combat proficiency with light-elemental magic and rods (notably the "Crystal Rod" and "Deck Brush" gag weapon), and the use of wisdom to mediate conflicts—such as diffusing Lloyd's arguments against Kratos Aurion by emphasizing collective concern over individual anger.
