Description
Colette Brunel grew up in the village of Iselia, Sylvarant, aware of her destiny as the seventh Chosen of Regeneration. Born holding a Cruxis Crystal, her role required sacrifice to restore the world's mana. Her adoptive parents, Frank and Phaidra Brunel, nurtured her selfless nature, though she hid the fatal truth of her journey from childhood friends Lloyd Irving and Genis Sage. This ingrained tendency to prioritize others over herself defined her character, extending to suppressing personal anguish to shield her companions. Formal education in Iselia's schoolhouse forged her close bonds with Lloyd and Genis, yet her status as the Chosen also brought periods of isolation and a life centered on prayer and duty.
Her pilgrimage, the Journey of Regeneration, commenced at sixteen after an oracle from Cruxis. Initially escorted by the mercenary Kratos Aurion and her teacher Raine Sage, she was later joined by the banished Lloyd and Genis. Traveling Sylvarant to release five seals, Colette gradually transformed into an angel, gaining enhanced senses and wings while losing human functions like taste, speech, and the need for sleep. She tried to conceal these changes, especially from Lloyd, though her fading humanity made the deterioration undeniable. Her inherent clumsiness, often perceived as a divine quirk, inadvertently aided the group, disabling machinery or creating openings. An obliviousness to danger occasionally surfaced, like when she revealed her identity to an assassin while expressing concern for their safety.
Reaching the Tower of Salvation for her final sacrifice, Colette relinquished her heart and memories to become a vessel for the goddess Martel's resurrection, believing it would save Sylvarant. Cruxis's plan was interrupted by the Renegades, who transported her unconscious form to Tethe'alla. She awoke after Lloyd engraved a Key Crest into her necklace, simultaneously contracting Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium, a rare angelic disease causing painful bodily crystallization. Embarrassed and wishing to avoid worry, she concealed the affliction even as symptoms escalated to visible crystallization and physical collapse. Guilt over failing the regeneration intensified after her abduction by Desian leader Rodyle, who deemed her "sinful and useless," reinforcing her self-doubt despite knowing the ritual offered only false peace.
Her crisis peaked when Cruxis leader Mithos captured her and forcibly merged Martel's consciousness into her body within the Great Seed Chamber. Martel initially controlled Colette's form to condemn Mithos, until Zelos Wilder's intervention expelled Martel's consciousness. Colette later revealed Martel had implored her to stop Mithos, and she retained an understanding of Martel's sorrow. Confronting a mirror image of the angel Remiel on Derris-Kharlan, she endured chastisement for abandoning her duty and attempted to persuade Mithos to surrender by invoking Martel's wishes, though this failed.
After the unification of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla, Colette dedicated herself to ensuring no one would repeat her sacrificial path, advocating for a world where lives were not born solely to die. She supported Lloyd in collecting residual Exspheres to prevent exploitation and aided in stabilizing the unified world. Her commitment to protecting others remained central in later years, reflecting her evolution from destined martyr to active guardian of peace.
