Colette Brunel hails from Iselia village in the fading world of Sylvarant. Identified at birth as the Chosen of Regeneration because of her lineage and the Cruxis Crystal embedded in her hand, she was raised by her adoptive father and grandmother knowing her destiny demanded self-sacrifice to restore Sylvarant's mana. This expectation cultivated profound selflessness, though she formed deep childhood bonds with Lloyd Irving and Genis Sage, strengthened further at Iselia's schoolhouse.
Her journey commences on her sixteenth birthday when a Cruxis oracle commands her pilgrimage. Initially joined by Lloyd, Genis, their teacher Raine Sage, and mercenary Kratos Aurion, she travels Sylvarant to release five seals. Releasing each seal erodes her humanity: first the need for sleep, then taste, physical sensation, and finally speech. She hides these losses, especially from Lloyd, to shield her companions. The final seal demands surrendering her heart and memories, transforming her into an unresponsive vessel meant for the goddess Martel. The group discovers this serves Cruxis leader Mithos Yggdrasill's aim to revive his sister Martel within her body.
Rescued by the Renegades and taken to Tethe’alla, Colette regains consciousness after Lloyd carves a Key Crest into her necklace. This stabilizes her Cruxis Crystal, restoring basic functions like eating and feeling while preserving her angelic powers. She retains memories of her soulless state. Soon after, she contracts Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium, a rare angelic disease causing painful bodily crystallization. Guilt over failing her regeneration duty and fear of burdening others lead her to conceal this condition.
Colette evolves by confronting her guilt and forging a new purpose. Learning the World Regeneration perpetuates conflict between Sylvarant and Tethe’alla—restoring mana to one world drains the other—she rejects her sacrificial destiny. Embracing Lloyd's ideal of solutions without sacrifice, she commits to reuniting the two worlds. Her resolve is tested when Mithos forcibly merges Martel’s consciousness into her body. Sensing Martel’s anguish and desire to stop Mithos during the fusion strengthens Colette's determination to end the conflict.
In combat, Colette wields chakrams for melee strikes and long-range throws. Her evolving angelic abilities grant spells like Judgment and Holy Song, blending physical agility with light-based magic. Her perceived clumsiness sometimes yields fortuitous outcomes, like unintentionally disabling traps or machinery.
Relationships shape her path. Her bond with Lloyd is central; she protects him fiercely and harbors unspoken romantic feelings. His refusal to accept her sacrifice fundamentally alters her view of her worth and destiny. She forms unexpected friendships, such as with Sheena Fujibayashi, initially sent to assassinate her. Colette's persistent kindness and refusal to see Sheena as an enemy turn her into an ally. She extends similar compassion to Presea Combatir, forgiving actions taken under Rodyle’s influence due to understanding Cruxis Crystal numbness.
Following Sylvarant and Tethe’alla's reunification, Colette dedicates herself to collecting remaining Exspheres to prevent their misuse, ensuring no one else suffers exploitation as she did.
