Refill Sage, also known as Raine Sage, is a 23-year-old half-elf teacher residing in Iselia village. Standing 166 cm tall with silver hair and gray eyes, she lives there with her younger brother, Genius Sage. They relocated years before the main events, seeking refuge and hiding their half-elf heritage to escape societal discrimination.
Abandoned by their mother in childhood, Raine raised Genius alone, fostering a deeply protective and responsible nature towards him. This abandonment and pervasive mistreatment fueled her initial distrust of others and a pragmatic, cautious approach. She consistently prioritizes long-term consequences over immediate emotions, opposing actions that might provoke groups like the Desians.
Highly respected in Iselia for her exceptional intellect, Raine is a stern, disciplined teacher. She employs physical corrections like slaps or kicks for misbehaving students, including Lloyd Irving or Colette Brunel. However, she struggles severely with domestic tasks, particularly cooking and laundry, resulting in repulsive meals and reliance on Genius for household management; comments about her cooking provoke her temper.
Raine joins Colette Brunel's World Regeneration journey, initially serving as a skeptical, cautious voice. Her personality evolves during the journey as she gradually learns to trust others, particularly Lloyd Irving, whose idealism she initially dismissed but later supported. A defining trait is her intense obsession with ruins and ancient magitechnology, termed "Ruin-Mode" by Genius. This fascination overrides her usual composure, manifesting as intense excitement or single-minded focus at archaeological sites. This obsession stems subconsciously from a search for the Otherworldly Gate, the ruin where she and Genius were abandoned.
In combat, Raine wields staves or rods, specializing in healing and support magic with limited offensive capabilities. Her restorative spells include First Aid, Heal, Cure, and Resurrection, while her support arts encompass Barrier and Sharpness. She also commands light-elemental offensive spells like Photon and Holy Lance. Her arte progression branches into "Technical" (favoring area-based effects) or "Strike" (prioritizing single-target potency). As the party's primary healer, her high intelligence grants her a large TP pool and strong elemental defense, making her crucial to the group's effectiveness.
Raine's character development involves confronting her trauma from abandonment and racial prejudice, allowing her to become more open and less cynical. A pivotal moment occurs when her healing arts fail to save Governor-General Dorr, intensifying her resolve to prevent future losses. This commitment to preserving lives becomes a driving force in her actions.
